🩼 Old Farts - Reminiscing on the Past

Same. Recall UConn spent more weeks at #1 that year but it sure felt like a Rocky 4 situation at the time. That duke team was capital-L Loaded.

I remember a game against UConn were we scored only 8 points in the first half. Don’t remember the year but it had to be early 90s.
I remember listening to it on the radio in a small bedroom i turned it into my UVA shrine

Ha. 1993 first game of the season. Cory got hurt early and that game

The only game I missed during my four years at UVa. Was serving a frat public service project at Channel 29 that night.

Deane vs. Powell became the contest after Cory went down.

Cheesesteaks at Lupo’s were outstanding.

And, when it happened, I thought that Mike Powell would be his replacement. Who knew that Harold would be such a good point guard? Lesson learned: Never buy into all the recruiting hype.

There was a game where (I think) Rip Hamilton went off on us and in the post-game interview, Calhoun said something to the effect that Hamilton’s defense needed work, but he’s good at scoring so they let him do that.

Wonder if that’s the same game you’re remembering.

Different game. Hamilton left UConn in 99.

Probably Donyell Marshall or Ray Allen. They were at UConn at the time.

Tbh, I just did Zaytinya in DC ( 5 drinks, 4 apps) for less than $100, with tips, so I’m super
excited.

Donyell Marshall sounds right. At least as far as the game that I’m trying to remember.

The Castle’s still there, but it’s now ā€œplant forwardā€ - goes against everything my loaded double cheeseburger eating undergrad self stood for then and my clogged artery self stands for now.

Yikes. I don’t know what ā€œplant forwardā€ means, but I’m sure it’s not in the family of ā€˜drop step’ or ā€˜pivot foot’, so I don’t want to know. I just want my Castle cheeseburger or grilled cheese.

Not an old fart (not that there’s anything wrong with that!), but I was in Page the last year that the castle was the Castle, before they renovated everything. Felt cheated that I got a taste of the good stuff before they updated it!

A lot of my friends swore by the Cave in Old Cabell, but I was a diehard Castle fanatic. Double swiss cheese burgers with everything…aaahh.

Maybe. There weren’t many bigs in the Richmond area at the time. John Marshall had one. Petersburg had one. Wythe’s center was 6’2 250 (but very athletic). Patrick Henry had Erron Kinney, who ended up being a 6’6 TE for Florida. He struggled with Kinney. And he really struggled with Monsanto Pope at Hopewell — Ducharme had four inches on him, but Pope had 30 lbs on Ducharme.

That Hopewell-Douglas Freeman regional final game was a classic.

I think Armstrong had a big that was a defensive tackle type that may have had a Clemson football offer at the time, or even went there for football. Don’t know if Freeman played Armstrong but he would have been a load to handle too.

My brother fouled out with two minutes left in regulation for DSF. His replacement hit the corner three to get the game to OT.

The Ashe Center was rocking.

(Hopewell had the best player on the court that evening — Rip Morse. He and Kitwan Heath from John Marshall were the best athletes in the Central Region that year.)

Pope was 6-foot-3 - but played ā€˜bigger’ - what an athlete. Several years in the NFL…
Some considered him the best to come out of Hopewell - loved the coaches at that school - football and basketball they had two good ones! Wonder where Pope is today…???

I was a senior at Hopewell then. I was in the seats behind the basket at the other end of the court when that dagger three was made. Was a gut shot.

Did Freeman have to play Danville in the state playoffs? They had the guy that was a DT at UGA and later the Bills before he got into legal trouble.
