🩼 Old Farts - Reminiscing on the Past

I’m not sure I even knew Beast came in kegs

If we’re talking best places to buy, had like 3 Korean convenience stores in NOVA that were the go to. At 16 as long as you ā€œforgotā€ your ID, you were usually still ok. Pretty sure none are still around.

The first time I bought Heineken, I thought I had ā€œmade itā€.

I think a fun addendum to this convo is what were your ā€œtransition beersā€? As in, the first beers you started to drink that weren’t cheap ā€œintro beersā€.

Think mine were Shocktop, Magic Hat, and Blue Moon starting in like 4th year, as they probably were for a ton of people at the time.

Great question. I remember tasting a Magic Hat No.9 that a rep bought me at a bar not long after I graduated college and I thought what is this witchcraft of a beer?

I’m with @GulfCoastHoo I went through a phase right after college when I started drinking Heinekens and Micholob Amber Bock they were sponsors of the league and team I played for and I thought I was the sh%t.

…then you had to taste it, and realize it was shitty…

…at least that was my experience

I had a buddy who swore by Rolling Rock thought it was the best thing ever. I actually liked it but refused to buy it after my Mom’s telling me how it was the crap beer when she was in school and that’s what they drank.

Natty Light for the most part, but occasionally we’d get a 30-pack of Beast Ice when it was on sale for like $6.99. I was never a fan of Beast Ice but the deal was too good to pass up considering I had no money.

I also vividly remember my buddy and I deciding in all seriousness that we were loading up on nice beer for my 21st. That nice beer was Coors Light.

I distinctly remember getting a bonus onetime my 3rd year and immediately going out to the store to buy a keg of Killian’s. Thought I was JayZ in the club.

Ok, 30 for under $7 might win the prize.

Cheapest I can ever remember going was a 12 of something called Meister Brau for 3.99 and I’m not sure we even finished it, it was that bad.

Definitely would hit up Mike’s Bistro on the corner for Abita Purple Haze that they had on tap during late 3rd and all of 4th year.

I won a case of Busch at Mrs Mac’s Kitchen on Key Largo by getting the high score of the week on her one pinball machine while waiting for breakfast one spring break morning long ago. Never really liked it though - haha.

Still heartbroken Michael’s Bistro closed. They served many a Hoo many a transition beer.

I loved that place. Would go a couple of times a week there with my girlfriend (wife now) and friends because the food was good and the beers were good. I loved the location too. I know we have gone over this before but when did it close and what is there now?

I’m pretty sure it closed during the pandemic sometime. Not sure what’s there now though. Haven’t ventured up those stairs recently.

I don’t recall anything being there back in Nov when I was inntown. Shame loved that place. Would go there with my wife (then gf) as well. Also was a lowkey afternoon hangout for us. I was sitting at the bar watching Texas vs A&M when i found out Tiger Woods had his first car crash.

Bartenders always poured a stiff vodka soda as well

At UVa, I generally went with whatever was cheapest, back then it was either Schlitz, Bud, Pabst or Miller. In warmer weather I really liked Miller ponies (7oz glass bottles) on ice.

During the summer in the Chicago area, also went really cheap (69 cents with a nickel back a retuned bottle) with some more regional brews that are no longer in production. General go to was Heileman’s Old Style (or Special Export), Stroh’s or Carling Black Label (ā€œThat calls for another Black Label, Mabel!ā€), brands that you don’t see anymore.

Special occasions demanded a special beer - Michelob in the curvy bottle. I remember busting the bank to pay over $2.00 for a 6-pack,
