The lawyer for the Mousetrap, John Lowe, was a fascinating guy â quite the firebrand. He was instrumental in moving UVa toward coeducation and an advocate for reforming the Honor System. If my memory serves, he also helped advise The Cavalier Daily when Frank Hereford threw us out of our offices in 1979.
I had a couple cases against John back in the nineties. Fascinating guy, but he had some blind spots because he often discounted the intelligence of his opponents. He just couldnât fathom anybody being in his league intellectually. I also appeared in front of Johnâs twin brother, Jerry, who was a federal magistrate, several times. I think itâs fair to say that Jerry wasnât exactly in Johnâs intellectual league.
Actually, the Mousetrap was an incredibly pleasant place to drink. Among other things, the wait staff was always pleasant and gracious. This was probably related to the fact that there was no tipping. There was a 20% surcharge on every tab (16% for the staff and 4% for the Commonwealth), which meant above average earnings for a place which catered to college students (notoriously bad tippers). Also, 64 oz pitchers of Michelob (Light or Dark) were $2.50, and with the surcharge came to $3.00. It was quite easy to work that into the budget even if you did drink it from a Mason jar. Lastly, the nightly music was pretty good if not a bit heavy on John Prine covers. FWIW, the very best performance of All Along the Watchtower I ever heard came on a dreary mid week late night visit there.
Back when my Steelers had 2 Hoos!
Was anyone else at the opening football game in '95? vs Texas?
I was there with my dad and the Texas starting QB was named James Brown⊠these two dudes behind us were drunk before the game started and were yelling the whole gameâŠ
âJames Brown you suck!â
âJames Brown⊠go back to singingâ
âJames Brown⊠get on up!â
I think we destroyed Texas that day⊠makes me sad that we couldnât destroy Texas anymore.
Not sure why I was thinking about that game today, but I wasâŠ
That was 1996 in the rain.
In 1995, we lost on a FG (Phil Dawson), but that FG should have needed to be a TD. Garcia made one from 50+ that the refs called no good. It was, in fact, good.
Legendary screw job in Austin.
Edit: The Garcia miss was from 33 with 12 minutes left. The kid kicked it well above the uprights â absolutely crushed it.
I was at that game, visiting colleges my senior year in HS. We got soaked. But scored like 35 points in the first quarter.
Remember Earl Campell running through and over our defense in 1977. 68 to 0 beat down.
Wow. That happened?
Oh, that was the game with that unforgettable quote from a UVA player that made it into Sports Illustrated Quotes of the week, âWe thought theyâd be betterâ. That was beautiful. I think he was serious.
Opening game in 95 was @Michigan on our move-in day. We shall never speak of that game again.
I still hate Mercury Hayes.
(But I guess Ronde gets the last laugh when heâs inducted into Canton.)
Damn⊠that game is seared in my brain too⊠the way Keith Jackson said mercury hayes really irritated me.
Best âthey said itâ line ever in SI. Cracks me up to this day and I often use a variation of that line when I get my ass kicked in something. If you think about it, it really is pure greatness as it explains your ass-kicking but still manages to disparage the other team. Genius - just another reason to love UVa and itâs athletes.
That was back-up QB Ted Manly who is, like me, a proud alum of George Washington High School in Danville, VA.
Yea was 96. My first year and boy that was a fun intro to the season!
Last game I wore a shirt and tie to, student or otherwise.
That was the second home game of the year right? Central Michigan was the opener just after Hurricane Franâs remnants came through Grounds and Charlottesville. It got me out of my first quiz as a UVA student that Friday. And of course, I hadnât studied for it so having classes canceled that day was a blessing.
I think there was a Patrick Jeffers TD catch nullified in that game too that was also a screw job call.
Wasnât that the game that produced the Virginia player quote, âThe game wasnât nearly as close as the score indicated!â, or something like that.
Seems like it. This was the post two down from the one you replied to.
