May be a litle off here but it was 1977 (?) and i believe the quote in SI They Said It was backup QB Ted Manly saying “they were’nt as good as we thought they would be” after we lost 68-0
Mid September 1977. Good memory. Earl Campbell looked like a man playing against boys that day. Played less than half the game but rushed for 150+ yards and a couple of touchdowns. Those weren’t the good old days.
Coach K’s memory would have been that he played all 60 minutes and amassed 600 yards. Set up that strawman and pound it in until everyone believes it to be true.
For good UVA football.
Man I used to love SportsCenter
I remember going into that 96 game, Ricky Williams said that all he remembered about the 95 game was that the holes were so big he could drive a truck through them. Apparently we were insulted cause our D guys supposedly asked him how big the hole was after every tackle. We mostly shut him down that day after he gashed us in 95. Don’t know if that bulletin board material caused the guys to play harder or better or anything, but we sure did give em a beating.
The rain was epic in the first quarter.
Would have been our second or third home game as first years. The soaking from the rain made me decide no more shirt and ties to football games.
Living in Echols, the visitors had a tailgate in the grassy area between the dorm and Alderman. I lived on the hall with the side entrance/exit which gave us easy access to the tailgate area and fans walking by our window in the front. So we spent way too much time that day leading up to the game harassing Texas fans about how we were going to roast Bevo if he made an appearance at their tailgate.
You guys are making me relive a lot of bad days. A lot of pain and anguish over the years being a UVA fan. There were good days too! Wally Walker, Jeff Lamp / Lee Raker “the Gold Dust Twins,” Ralph, Richard Morgan, Bryant Stith, the great first class for Jeff Jones with Corey, Chris, Yuri, Junior, and JWilli, and then Tony has had some good hauls with the 2016 class the best.
And there were unheralded guys that played their hearts out for us over the years. Holland, Jones, and now Tony have been good at finding ways to get wins with prospects that never made the radar of many of our peers.
But man, some of those we lost really hurt.
Some would say Kenny Smith hurt most. Odom has implied over the years that Smith might have “committed” during his visit, but he’s never come right out and said it.
You know you’re in a UVA forum when you can see an effortless pivot from a 5-star recruit’s pending decision to the worst recruiting gut-punches in school history.
Not basketball, but I’m going to add the double whammy of Saddler and Hale committing to Pitt after Dave Wanstadt cried. Then I went to see UVa lose to Cuse at JPJ that night. Good times
To be fair having scouted many other forums of different programs, pivoting threads is the one thing they all have in common. Every recruiting thread either devolves into old stories or comparising cities and college campuses as living situations.
Are there really forums from programs with the success we’ve seen that get as Eeyore as us?
That’s one I forgot to mention. We’ve taken so many brutal hits in recruiting over the years that it is hard to remember them all.
CRD! Long time no see!
Isn’t there a thread for old farts reminiscing
I think this is healthy therapy while waiting to get hurt again. It’s like you see the cement truck coming and you know you can’t get up in time to avoid it, but you tell yourself you’ve been run over many times and survived it so all hope is not lost.
Besides, this is damn good education for all the young wet-behind-the-ear, whippersnappers around here.
Very true
Story I got on that one was him, Sheehy, Dalyrmple, and another kid, five star type played on the same aau team. They were all suppose to come here, Tom committed then the rest went their own way.
Polynice was on that trip.
