The first half was glorious. The second half was a little awkward once both teams pulled their key guys and then Wake started to pile up chances. Simmonds looks awesome, especially for a freshman.
In my mind, awesome result. And still gives Coach ample opportunity to target continued improvement. And glad that Goff is covering UVA soccer some now after he’s left the Post. The Post loves to cover UMD and Tech but coverage is always light on UVA.
Was there last night. We looked absolutely fantastic for 60 minutes. Wake looked far from the #1 team in the country. Was a great night at Klockner.
Both men’s and women’s soccer have now beaten the #1 team.
Women’s soccer might have the juice this season. Undefeated and ascendant to the #1 ranking for the first time in a little bit. Ella Carter has two straight games with goals from outside the box:

Field Hockey is undefeated as well so far.

Strong start to the season for Gary Martin.

UVA has 35 natties across all NCAA D1 sports. Only 5 occurred prior to 1990, 30 since. There have been 7 times in which UVA has won two in a single year, 5 of which were in the last decade (the other 2 in the early 90s), and 2018 was the last year we were equalled by little brother with an empty trophy case.
UVA has climbed up to a tie for 14th alongside Oregon and Denver (skiing dynasty). Without looking, how many of the top 13 can you get before guessing a wrong answer?
Here’s the link to check: List of NCAA schools with the most NCAA Division I championships - Wikipedia
What are the odds that UVA brings home 3 natties for the first time in school history to bring us even with number 13 on the list?
Women’s soccer ranked #1
Women’s swim/dive (obviously)
Field Hockey ranked #2
Men’s Golf got close last year
Men’s Tennis?
Baseball?
Either lax team?
Any others have a shot that I missed?
I wrote down 10 guesses, figuring there was no way I’d get farther than that. Did better than I expected with 8. Just missed with guess #9 and then guess #10 was surprisingly far off the rails.
Mens soccer beat UW Milwaukee last night 3-2… should have blown them out however.

This goes along with my ask pretty well.
Looked at all teams with at least 30 natties, UVA has 10th most since 1990 (recognize my Neckel data parsing here), but since we started winning regularly, it ranks out:
Stanford - 98
UCLA - 64
USC - 46
Arkansas - 41
Texas - 40
Penn State - 39
UNC - 39
Florida - 37
LSU - 34? (Wiki didn’t have page like others and site I found counted 5 extras, this is my best guess.
UVA - 30
Georgia - 29
Cal/UMD - 27
Stanford should never count. National titles for things you would do at a summer camp located on a vineyard frauds
Think Arkansas was the one I was most surprised by being above us still.
Funny you should say that. A guy who played soccer with me on my HS soccer team ended up getting a full ride to Alabama for…
He was being recruited at the Division II & III levels for both basketball and soccer… but chose water skiing. I’ll be honest… if I had not known he went to Alabama on a water skiing scholarship, I probably still would not know that water skiing was an NCAA sport and scholarship opportunity.
Just watch Field Hockey stay undefeated on a breakaway goal against Duke in the 2nd OT!
