Are you aware of a precedent here? Even if your theory is correct, it’s not at all common - hence the “weird.”
The only thing that makes sense to me is that he failed every class in the fall semester and they are trying to help him out at the beginning of the spring semester so that doesn’t happen again. But they conveniently wanted to make sure he’s back in time for the Big 10 Tournament, which is Michigan’s only chance to make the NCAAs, even though it’s a small chance.

This Michigan Maryland game is abysmal. UVA in it’s 20 point blowout losses beats both these teams by 10 at least easily.
