Seems rude of the article to classify Michigan St (and maybe Gonzaga too) with pits of despair like UCLA. Michigan St has 7 losses, yes, but 6 of them were in Q1 games. Theyâre still in the top 20 in most predictive ratings.
I actually think UCLA might have some commonalities with us, in an odd way. Those international dudes were very well regarded coming into the season, showing up on draft boards. But they seem like a bad match with Cronin and maybe they were not as good or as refined as was expected.
I feel like, in our team, in the preseason, I saw a bunch of athletic and/or talented and/or skilled younger guys, some with NBA upside (RD most immediately, and obviously). And I saw some transfers who could fill important roles (competent 5, backup PG, stretch 4 providing immediate offense). But individual flaws were more pronounced than I hoped, and the whole is not really exceeding any of the parts, and now we are happy just to have our role guys back and playing wellâŚ
No one is immune to a down season, even Few is having one. Gonzaga wouldnt be in the field today and has no room for error the rest of the season really
Where is this more than 4 years stuff coming from?
I suspect itâs just that the NCAA is losing on basically all of its rules, so itâll probably lose on that, too.
It feels like weâre approaching the point where making football and maybe basketball players employees is less expensive and than the entire structure getting torn down.
I mean, seriously, thatâs probably 10-12k kids nationwide whoâd be affected and theyâre spending millions a year failing to defend it. Just let them go and move on.
Damnit⌠I coulda been a 23rd Year Senior right now! Stupid NCAA! Can you imagine if this was going on during Kiheiâs Super Senior Year? This forum wouldâve exploded.
I think conferences could probably enforce 4, but I forget my autonomy conference stuff tbh. I donât think the 4 thing is in what the DOJ joined, but I could be wrong.
What do you think @AnonymooseHoo - tbh youâve had a better instinct with this stuff than me. Could the Power 6 all individually but not collectively decide on a 4 year restriction and then like the MWC and A-10 will take let anyone whoâs taking any extension class at any campus play?
I keep thinking these and various other restrictions are sorta legal, but thereâs PR and paying your lawyers and winning Pyrrhic victories like in Alston at district and circuit level.
I donât know. I donât know shit about how to run a good offense and Iâm much more confident about my takes there than on this stuff where I ostensibly have some experienceâŚ
Mere parallel conduct is not conspiracy
(Not a lawyer, not legal advice)
More seriously, plenty of universities have graduation restrictions on time to completion. Or similarly, I think the ABA requires you to finish law school within x years of beginning.
Once again I think the burn it all down in the name of antitrust is embarrassing. And I think AAG Kanter needs to think if he is being made a pawn of a few very rich college athletics departments.
Too late. Busted
Read the rest - interesting take. I think I agree
I just canât wait to see what will happen when, in the name of antitrust, we agree that college sports cannot restrict (1) compensation (2) transfers (3) graduation requirements
It also sucks to obfuscate all the great things are antitrust laws, and antitrust enforcers do, by getting them involved in this
Tbh, my guess is theyâre not that involved. Letting the states go first seems telling. Or maybe not. I donât know
And also, Minnesota tied with Izzo
Just with all of this stuff, I go think about Stevensâ (RIP :/) opinion in NCAA v Board of Regents of Oklahoma and think how prescient it is

As a non-lawyer or student of university trust law, I have a sneaking suspicion that this all comes down to theâFlux-Capacitorâ. Just a hunch.
MSU finished on a 14-4 run. Gophers were playing without their starting PG, and turned over somewhere just shy of 1 million times.
I turned it on just in time to see MSU go on a run
Lol the Cronin quotes in this:
Yeah, why would Cam Spencer wanna go start for a natty winner, that has a decent chance to repeat, thatâs just a few hours drive from where he grew up (Maryland) and even closer to where he went to school last year (NJ)?
Hey! Must be the Money!

I mean, money is important, but thatâs a weird example.
No he should have wanted to play for a weird angry guy who throws his players under the bus: https://themessenger.com/sports/ucla-basketbal-coach-mick-cronin-berates-his-players-after-loss-you-cant-call-your-mommy
âI know youâre gonna ask me about guysâ confidence, you know, it is what it is,â Cronin told reporters after talking about the turnovers and mistakes his team made. âYou canât call your mommy, she canât help you. You got an opportunity of a lifetime, that may not last depending on your performance.â
Maybe UCLAâs NIL situation is a dumpster fire, but this kinda smells of an underperforming coach raising the pay-to-play boogeyman to keep the heat off of him.
