Is JMU basketball ranked higher than UVA in tomorrows poll? (3-0 with wins over michigan state and two tournament teams from last year in Howard and Kent St)
I answered yes, because the AP poll is dumb that way, and goes from a ranking of the 25 best teams in preseason to a ranking of 25 teams by some incoherent jumble of criteria thatâs different for each voter.
This is cool (trading cards). UVA should do thisâŚ.
Not a chance JMU is ranked in anything other than âothers receiving votesâ
I think the better question is whether weâll be ranked (as in actually included in top 25). We were 31 in the last poll, and will jump up to 28 if you just remove teams outside of the top 20 who lost (St Maryâs, Wisc, and MD). I think we probably squeak in at 24 or 25 by hopping over the likes of Colorado, UCLA, and St.Johnâs as they havenât beaten anybody even close to Floridaâs caliber. But maybe not. I could also see SDSU falling from 17 to out after losing to BYU
My interpretation has always been that none of these people have time to watch all the teams (or for some of them, any of the teams) and therefore most of the time just take their previous submission and then move teams up, down, in and out based on scores. Highly susceptible to baseline effects of being ranked at the beginning of the season. Which is why youâll usually see some top 10 teams have major upsets in the next couple weeks (they were never that good, they just were ranked 22nd and then had 5 cupcakes in a row)
So. Robert Jennings with Texas Tech has played 11 total minutes with 2 points in two games this season.
Jennings was set to commit to UVA on the transfer market prior to Getterâs departure.

JMU 23, UVA 27âŚ
Seems pretty silly if you ask me!
JMU is:
85th in Kenpom
54th in Bart Torvik even with Preseason ratings removed
To be fair, JMU is #2 in strength of record (weâre #10). Comes back to that age old question of whether the rankings are for best team or best resume (of course in practice they end up being some weird amalgamation of both).
They beat MSU at home and two decent mid-majors. I say let them have their 15-minutes; weâll see if theyâre still there come December.
Interesting piece is they donât play another current top 100 team. They could have some staying power if they can handle business
No issue with JMU being ranked. I think it would be messed up if they werenât. UVA should be in there too but I didnât expect it. The media is superficial. Florida wasnât ranked. The game was under the radar being on ACC Network. Didnât move their needle much.
I agree with all of this. Iâll add that Iâm confident the Florida win will be a quad 1 win for us which is much more important than cracking the top 25 poll. So even though our win went under the radar, it still shows up where it matters.
I really like Parrish, and heâs great on the CBS podcast (here comes the but), but if I could pick only one person whoâs most responsible for how inane the AP top 25 is, it would be him.
Gary, maybe the people who voted St Maryâs into their top 25 still think that St Maryâs is one of the top 25 teams, despite losing to Weber St. ![]()

Gonna say something possibly rude (not directed towards one person): for fans, the main function of the AP Poll is to serve as a pat on the head for their favorite team (and facilitate media hype), so this is why we end up with incoherent resume-ish rankings.
He didnât look good against Davidson. Didnât see the game vs. UAB.
The dream would be Cam Christie at Minnesota but he might play himself into being a one and done like his bro. Probably just as good as his brother (Max Christie) but had his growth spurt later/post aau (from 6â3/6â4 when we offered him to 6â7 now)
I dont get why this is a controversial take? Weber state has a better win (a top 25 st maryâs team vs a rebuilding Florida team) and between us and them they probably have the best individual player in Dillon Jones. Of course I think we end the season ahead of them but if rankings are to be seen as a snapshot of things currently I wouldnât argue this. Of course we are biased but also more closely following and see the potential others dont, but from an outsider perspective we basically were just less sloppy than Florida (in part due to our defense but also some miserable passing and vision from Florida).

Please remove preseason data from your model and recalculate
Dude is a Hokie. Thatâs pretty predictable.
Our fellow fans want the pat on the head too.
Whatâs going on with Michigan St.? They shot 2-31 from 3P in their first two games. Are they just going through a cold spell or are they actually terrible from 3?
