🏀 🎠 Outside UVa Coaching Carousel 2025

Figured I’d start a thread about other actual and potential openings, which might be useful as things heat up. There will be obviously be some overlap in the topics (especially if our candidates might be candidates elsewhere).

Here’s the Norlander article to set the scene:

Man, it would be something if scheyer had his own coaching tree

Athletic reports that it hears that Loucks is the leader at this point.

Which seems to contradict speculation that Pitino’s in the lead. Goodman doesn’t even mention Pitino.

I thought Pitino was a candidate at Miami? Is Jai Lucas happening at Miami, or was that just a rumor?

Oh. Maybe I mixed up Miami and FSU for Pitino. Athletic reported that Lucas has the Miami job until and unless reported otherwise.

I don’t think there is anything official because of timing. There are now rumors about who Lucas is going to have on his staff.

McCasland hired a sitting D1 head coach to be his OC. I know Shaka Smart and John Beilein did that in the past as well. Maybe Shaka hired a DC, but same concept.

Figured I’d start a non-UVa thread, even if it does diminish the likelihood we get to 10k here…

Jai Lucas is the prohibitive favorite at the Miami. Nothing official, but sounds like there is something akin to a verbal agreement there.

Loucks and Lucas to the Florida Schools.
There is real talk here in NC about NC State being open as soon as a week from today.

VCU has won 15 of the last 16 and has been held to less than 70 points one time since early December. Just get it done

I do think (personal gut feelings only) McKay decides to finish his career at Liberty, where he’s achieved a bit of a “Bob McKillop” stature.

But if he does want one last crack at a Power Conference job (whether at UVA or elsewhere), this is also the kind of move that ups his buyout such that Liberty at least gets better financially rewarded for losing him, as a way for McKay to thank Liberty for the opportunity.

From a competitive perspective, I love those hires for the Florida schools lol.

Run the damn ball! We’re overthinking it!

Re: FSU, surprised not to see Dennis Gates in consideration.

Yeah, interesting. Maybe he’s happy at Mizzou (headed for his second tourney in 3 years), or maybe didn’t feel comfortable succeeding Hamilton given the circumstances.

Plus he’s a Midwestern guy who played college ball in California, so his tie to FSU was Hamilton? Just speculating

On Gates, leaving a top-10 power conference team in adjusted efficiency for one that might not finish in the top-100 would be pretty unprecedented, right? Though it is kinda funny that Gates is still 10 games under .500 in conference play due to the awful year they had last season.
