So 3/14 seasons is working well? You guys and I simply have a different view on that.
“Well” would have to at least be a majority of seasons meaning 8/14.
Any system that cannot withstand an injury or an illness that happens 79% of the time in order to have March success is not running the right system. Unless we simply are happy with reg. season wins.
We’ve seen teams every single year go far in March while having sustained major injuries. Shoot - it happened to Auburn in 2019 - lost their best player and they still beat UNC and Kentucky and got to the Final 4 and would have gotten to the title game if not for the stupidest foul ever … no not the one on Guy in the corner. The one on Jerome at halfcourt that stopped the clock giving UVA time to run the play to Guy in the corner. If not Jerome throws up a 40 footer at the buzzer. Houston got to the Final 4 without their best player last year.
And those teams play different systems than Virginia, and they recruit differently than Virginia. Additionally, Virginia isn’t the only team which struggles in March. Lots of teams struggle in March. It’s a six game, single game elimination tournament. To be perfectly honest, I’d rather enjoy all the regular season conference championships, and just the occasional NCAAT success. I think the former is by far the more significant measure of a team than the latter.

Slick Rick out here dealin’.
Pitino my guy knows a few things about dingles. The recruiting pitch was firm - but exceedingly quick. That’s all he needed.
Johnnies have upgraded the coach a lot, but it seems like the roster, just a little. Seems like a bubble team, probably/maybe on the right side.
UNC fans are feeling the pain today
I believe THIS is the point, that they are running a different system so they are *able to adapt. We shouldn’t be so blinded to say that UVA can only run one system.
It sounds like this is the crux of the disagreement, where others want to strive to get better, be flexible and adapt to reach the exclusive level of ONE National champion in the tournament. Winning the ACC regular and/or tournament is nice, *but ever other conference has their regular season and tournament champions as well. There is only ONE National Champion- which is what the argument should be about- reaching that level.
But that is one coach that gets the most out of the guys he has so…
And, there would be the likely attendant risk that running different systems would lead to the mediocre execution of all of them. It is better to master one system (it’s worked pretty well so far) than become so-so in several. It’s worth remembering how much of practice is devoted to working the defense. At the same time, we’ve seen other teams try and execute the pack line defense without putting in the time.
There is just one national champion, and it is decided by a single, six game, single elimination tournament. Just six games. Certainly, the media hype which surrounds it sways many, but, in reality, the regular season performance of a team should be the true measuring stick. Winning a six game tournament is as much as matter of luck and good fortune as it is skill.
And, Coach Bennett has shown he is flexible. He tweaks his schemes every year according to the roster’s strengths and weaknesses. However, he doesn’t abandon the fundamentals which have proven to be so successful.
Pimp hair game…so we *really couldn’t use Shaedon Simpson eh? 6’6 Wing player getting over an injury whom may have been open to redshirting? (Though I don’t advocate redshirting). He may have been easier to land then say Jarin Stevenson at this point.
I gotta admit I like what UNC has done, at least for next year. I don’t see the need for them to add anyone else. Long term the program isn’t in great shape though because they’ve done a poor job of choosing high school recruits.
Elliot Cadeau will be a stud right away for them, not sure people get that. Him RJ Davis, Cormac Ryan, Ingram, and Bacot…that’s a high end starting five.
I agree, but it really all depends on this coming year. If this is a redemption arc year for Hubert, then recruiting and longer term stuff will fall into line, I think. And if it’s not, why would Hubert care about the long term health of UNC when he’s sitting next to Seth Greenberg in Bristol CT? (these are obviously two poles, and there is some daylight between the two)
Yeah when you’re UNC you can fix things through HS recruiting faster than anybody other than Duke or Kentucky. And obviously the portal allows for a quick patch each year.
Their 2024 guys should be really good too. I don’t keep up with the draft angle to have a feel for how long players will be around. Powell should be a beast. And I worry Cadeau falls into that 4-year great college player who doesn’t fit the NBA. That’s the kind of PG that wins you a championship if he’s there long enough to mature even a little.
True. However, that team doesn’t seem like one that plays good defense and don’t see any dynamic scorers.
I think it’s a good UVA team, but if you’re relying on Hubert to coach that group thru some guys, I don’t see high upside.
Probably 4-7 tourney seed.
They get better when Ian Jackson comes in with the 2024 class.
The question for any wing really. Crazy how that 6-5 to 6-9 height range contains so many possible and completely different skillsets
Beard has 2 transfers that will need waivers

These double transfers are why I don’t see why folks blame any college coach for roster construction… it’s too easy to transfer… am I saying it is wrong to allow it? No… but because of the simplicity of transferring, no way to predict and keep a stabile roster.
Edit: Ooops… spelled stable in German. ![]()
I guess he’s obviously a strong believer in second chances
