Exactly
In rereading @GoBlueHoo ’s post, if there is a true parsing of individual classes on a UNC transcript at the departmental level, then I could see why that takes time and why there’s so much variability.
But if that’s right, then a few things:
- maybe that’s another good reason why hoops players should be steered toward solid basic classes and not towards random seminars (paper classes) that are easy to fit into a hoops practice schedule. I know there’s a tendency to LOL at UNC here, given past sins, but there’s some universal applicability here too.
- it’s yet another reason why the current transfer rules are not well set up for more rigorous academic institutions like us, Michigan, etc. Not to go all John Donne here… (and yes, maybe I shouldn’t generalize so much from one case)
- is Juwan interested in any of the open NBA gigs? Between lower than expected NIL and pretty much getting limited to Ivy transfers, he must see the writing on the wall…
- For me (someone who’s always looking to buttress his priors), it is yet another reminder that UVa can play at the big boy table in HS recruiting to a much greater extent than we can in transfer recruiting, so that should be the strategy: get the 4 star top 75 guys, and then focus on keeping them here. Put some thought and effort and intentionality around balancing short and medium and long term goals. And fans, stop treating like some sort of virtue when Tony is only maximizing the short term goals. You wouldn’t praise your kids for failing the marshmallow test, so don’t praise your coach for it. (This post has been a journey, perhaps an overly long one)
It can take more than 5 minutes to evaluate a transcript for at least a couple of reasons. First, the person(s) who are making the decisions about transfer credits are doing so for hundreds of students each spring and summer (one of the busiest times in the A&S administrative office). Over the years, UVa has accepted more and more transfer students [it’s easier, in my opinion, to be accepted to UVa as a transfer student than as a 1st year]. Prospectives students who are athletes often receive priority in many ways, but that’s not necessarily the case at every step of the admissions process. And personally I don’t think it should be a priority at every step.
Also, if consultation with departments is necessary that does add time. I’ve been involved in such decisions and sometimes you have to ask a student (especially if a transfer student will be a major in your department) to provide a transcript for the class he/she took elsewhere so you can compare the material covered in that class with a possibly comparable course at the institution the student is transferring to. That’s particularly important for classes that are required courses for the major.
Finally, once a decision is made, a student or prospective student usually has the opportunity to appeal that decision. Sometimes there are a couple of appeal steps that you can try. That’s true for requirements related to grades, transfer credits or other things like the number of credits you have at the time you’re transferring. UVa, for example, requires that you have 55 credits to enroll for your 3rd year. Only 12 credits per semester (or 24 per academic year) are required by the NCAA to maintain eligibility. It’s thus possible that Love had 48 credits after his two years at UNC and was in good standing there but he would need an additional 7 credits hours to start the fall semester at UVa. He could take courses in the summer to solve that problem, but if this were the issue with Love, he might not want to take summer classes and thus might decide to transfer elsewhere.
In short, the whole process is more complex than most people think it is.
Thanks - that’s all very interesting and a useful perspective.
I’ll just say this aloud…I wouldn’t mind Caleb Love coming to our team, as we *could use another point guard. Provided of course Tony would be able to sculpt him, get more defensive production, educate, and rebuild his confidence.
I selfishly would love the bit of drama between us and UNC, if we are able to turn Caleb Love, into a 2nd rounder (at this point undraftable).

I would love it for the drama and for the story and for the 2% chance he recaptures some tourney run magic, but I wouldn’t like it for the 70% chance he winds up being exactly the same player and scaring our other guards away. ![]()
Well we *know he’s a bucket getter; we just DON’T need him to shoot up shots in the half court, without making the defense move. Plus- for his sake, having Tony Bennett co-sign on you and throw you a life line would really help him out. It would serve as a humbling experience, BUT I think could really do him well. Imagine him being a Trey Murphy like impact (being here only for a year), as long as he wants to learn how to defend, and be a positive influence on the team.
Is it fair to say that Juwan Howard “felt the Love?”
Or…
work with me here…
Programs should absolutely steer some guys to fluff courses that won’t transfer making it harder for said “student athlete” to transfer???

Trilly Donovan….40.
Caleb Love….love.
So they actually have betting odds on recruits now? I feel like I may have accidentally invented this, and it may also break me.
“Hey, Siri, what’s a list of D1 schools with, apparently, zero academic standards for athletes?”
At least they haven’t gone full crazy in the US yet… you can literally bet on anything here in Europe. Big Brother, Survivor, Political Elections, Dog Shows, you can prop bet almost anything too… how long King Charles will reign is a big mover right now.
What ever the line is I take the under on the length of Charles III’s reign. He will end the monarchy if they let him.
Who is this guy? Any good?
I don’t know, didn’t play much for UCLA. Wake’s done so well plucking obscure transfers I just assume they’ll all be great there.
With Klintman, I thought Wake was no Brainer top 4 ACC next year. Even without, it seems like they have enough solid depth to surprise as a “Pittsburgh type” from last year into the upper third of the conference.
