I think we need one more guard/wing. I expect Mallory to get time and Gertrude to be sprinkled in as he recovers. That is nice depth for th 1-3 spots. Then you need 3 more bigs unless they are super confident in Barksdale being able to do something. Maybe only 2. so Iād expect 4-5 more adds. 2-3 bigs and 2 guard/wing
Makes sense though Iām still not really sold on Shrewsberry.
This is the biggest question for me. Given that UVA folks think heās not getting the waiver, I hope we move on soon. Would love to have him, but as long as thereās a lingering possibility of us signing him later, weāre going to be unattractive to other prospects who want that PT.
The current roster has 6 guys in the main rotation, excluding Carrere, Barksdale, and Lang.
Onyenso would be 7.
That means we have 3-4 rotational players yet to add:
- Malik Thomas, hopefully
- A skilled 4/5
- Someone who can play the 4 (Arceneaux)
- One more guard, depending on who we get at numbers 2 and 3 (e.g., if we get Arceneaux he can play multiple spots, so may not add another guard).
I interpret this spot as āPassmore if he wants inā.
As it relates to the waiver, I honestly havenāt seen any recent activity from the NCAA. Part of me wonders if the NCAA is calling the playersā bluff, delaying so that many will give up and start their pro careers or move on altogether.
I thought Wahoos rallied around Nigel Johnson nicely after his accident, even though he was only here one year. The issue is more that the increased frequency of change means that youāre less likely to remember all the guys from a particular era.
Unfortunately, I think it means they are going to deny en mass. Unless they continue to be spineless and are waiting for some guidance from the courts.
NBA Prospectus for UVA Players and Potential UVA Players
- Johann Grünloh ā 2025/2026 2nd round
- Baba Miller ā 2026 2nd round
- Rakease Passmore ā #121 for 2026 (A high flying athlete and power-dunker with a lot of upside.)
- Terrance Arceneaux ā #131 for 2026 (A big time athlete with NBA level ability who might take some time to develop.)
- Ugonna Onyenso ā #151 for 2026 (A special athlete and a great shot blocker who is just starting to figure out how good he can be. Has a NBA level frame and projects as a solid defensive player and rim runner at the next level.)
Fixed it ā so you can also be talking about their fanbase.
A lot of NBA upside in that group, although Ugo and Arc donāt have as much as they did a year or two ago, when they got discussed as potential first rounders if they hitā¦
Thereās a a key word in the descriptions for all three of Passmore, Arceneaux, and Onyenso ā āathlete.ā
I thought this was gonna to be the story for them for 2024-25 and then it just didnāt work. The Burton injury didnāt help but he played close to a full conference schedule and they werenāt good there either. Not surprising that they are taking the most-Purdue like approach to roster building outside of Purdue.
And theyāre losing Tae Davis this year⦠not sure who theyāre adding. I think they have a good freshman class coming?
Good freshman class. Added no one of note in the portal. Lost Tae Davis. Will go as far as Burton and the freshman take them
Yeah. Haralson as an almost 5-star (#22 on the On3 composite) a couple guys in the back half of the top-100, a 3-star center and a transfer forward from NAU.
Alloco and Shrewsberry also missed significant time and Njie got hurt at the end of the year too. Donāt think they had more than a two or three week stretch of continuity all year which I think probably hurt chemistry. They showed flashes, beat us worse than pretty much anyone other than Duke. But I hear you about Papa Shrewsberry.
Donāt hear much, but Lang seems exciting piece. He started for Jerry Stackhouse who played at fast pace. Odom must like him as fit as him and Gertrude both kept and staying. Also both seem fast pace guys plus love uva. I am excited for Lang. any insights by more knowledgeable fans?
Whats the connection with Ugonna Onyenso? I have not been able to find anything.
Not really (no insight + not much knowledge, Lol)⦠but I donāt let that stop me, so here goes:
It basically looks like he played sparingly once conference season started. Only 4 SEC games where he had double digit minutes. Biggest stat line was 9 boards in 15 minutes vs Tennessee. On a 9-23 / 4-14 team.
Then he came here non-scholarship and word was he wanted to be pre-med. And then decided to redshirt.
Depending on who else we sign, tho, we may find out much more!
