🏀 PORTAL SEASON (UVa Offseason) 2026

I agree with most. But most analysts question last year’s team because we never had a true signature win against a competitive team. We were never tested against the top teams in the country, minus Duke (Louisville doesnt count without Mikel). We were a 3-seed that lost to a 6-seed. How do we improve? I don’t fault Ryan for recruiting an older group last year; that was smart. But going forward, I don’t think that will be his approach. It’s starting to show….Dixon is proof.

Who is currently our backup pg?

It’d probably be Dixon. Eli or Carrere as abstract options.

Interesting. We don’t have one.

Agree and also we still have Johann, who 1) was very good last year and 2) probably will be eve better next year.

Ugo was a unicorn. Maybe one of the best success stories nationally. If Grünloh left, then maybe we could have replaced with a player with production comparable to Ugo’s (Massamba Diop seems like the only guy that could’ve potentially had that kind of impact). As it stands now, Grünloh is probably a top 5-10 center nationally. That’s not too bad. Adding Bamgboye behind him would be fantastic.

Dixon isn’t a PG imo. Think it’s highly likely we add another ball handler. And Eli is probably next on that list.

He’s not. The question was who would do that right now on the current roster.

I agree we should add another and Dixon would only do this in a pinch.

I did read that Dixons handles are pretty good

For all the times we called Rohde, Sahara… we should at least look at Mojave right? :joy:

Why does CavFutures follow him on IG?

Probably because he likes deserts.

They look pretty good. You see it the most in transition as he’s got a good feel for how to take different angles to create space around the rim and lure his defenders.

He’s efficient with the ball i.e. he doesn’t spend a lot of time dribbling. It’s pivoting/faking and then getting into a drive pretty quickly, using a ball screen and taking the drive to a spot to pass or shoot… or keeping the ball moving otherwise. He’s got a nice first step.

I’m not sure he’s the guy you want to clear out for in isolation at the end of the shot clock, though, because he’s better attacking when he’s been able to create some kind of advantage through the offense or misdirection than from parity. And I think his release, especially from three, is on the slower side.

Didn’t quite overlap in anything with Jack or Taine, but I think he and Kody have overlapped for a season with Cairns in Australia.

He is saying if we want to beat high-end teams, we need to be one ourself.

No idea how our current starting 5 doesn’t constitute a “high end team” but okay

Yall are taking one close loss to a GREAT, under-seeded Tennessee team as confirmation that we’re not capable of winning multiple tourney games. I think 30 games are more indicative of the state of our program than one game. But that’s just me

Disagree. Malik came from the WCC (a tougher league annually) and on higher usage was still as efficient as Dixon was. Dixon is a good piece but if he is your primary 2 then he has to improve as much as he did this past year but do that while stepping up to much higher competition.

I’m sorry, but I think you are underselling what this program and Coach Odom are capable of. I agree that we were probably in the same vicinity as Tennessee, but I think it is also clear given what happened to Tennessee against Michigan that we ended the year very far from a national title contender.

What we’ve put together for next year is going to be a very good team, but I’m not really sure it is a great team as currently constructed.

I love the season we had. It was a clear SUCCESS. 30 wins seems to be the mantra anyone defending improving on last years roster/team. We have to replace/upgrade from Ugo/Malik/Dallin/Jacari/Tillis to do that. We could win less games, say 27 and be a better team. The non con is going to be much harder with smoke about playing Uconn in MSG and the players era tourney is a big upgrade over the tourney that we played NW and Butler. I would bet we play a better team than Texas in the SEC Challenge as well. @Texas was our toughest OOC game. We will likely have 3 or 4 tougher games OOC. Will the ACC be slightly better as well? We will see.
