You’re probably right I can see it in place before 2030 if I’m being honest.

Not Duke, but we have to join up with UNC to join the B1G ASAP.

Add some combo of 2 or more AAU schools among Oregon, Washington, Georgia Tech, Cal, Stanford, Utah, Kansas, Colorado and (non-AAU) Notre Dame to get to 20. SEC adds maybe Clemson, FSU and a couple others (maybe NCSU, Kansas, Colorado, Utah or VT) to get to 20. Maybe 2 24 team conferences. That’s 2 superconferences with the 40-50ish most powerful sports programs in America.

If we want to compete, we cannot be left behind.

This is a great tweet…but the funniest part is it’s from a guy who covers Pitt haha

This is so fucking stupid. Nobody wants this. No fans said ā€œI want UCLA in the BIG10ā€. Zero.

College sports is trapped in this stupid spiral where everyone is chasing money and there’s no rules and as a result it’s actually undermining the sport and product. Everyone acting this way will eventually screw things up to the extent there’s less money. But I guess the few who got to the top will feel good about it.

There should be a college basketball dictator who could just get this sorted in like six months and then leave. I volunteer.

This is so stupid.

The worst part is that Mark Emmert essentially declared himself a lame duck with that ā€œIm retiring in a yearā€ announcement.

Maybe B1G adds 8 along with USC and UCLA to get to 24. Virginia, UNC, Duke, GT, Cal, Stanford, Oregon and Washington.

SEC adds 8 along with UT and OU to get to 24. Clemson, FSU, NC State, Miami (or VT), Kansas, Colorado, Utah and Arizona (or ASU).

ND stays independent. What relevant schools are left out? Miami/VT? Oregon/Washington/Arizona/Kansas/Oklahoma States? BC/Cuse/Wake/Pitt/Louisville? WVU/TTU/TCU/Baylor/Cincy/Houston/UCF/BYU?

Not missing them in any way.

Classic collective action problem

Tech can’t go to the B1G. Not an AAU school.

They’re killing the sport. This is honestly really bumming me out. I love college sports and regional rivalries and they are trashing it all for money.

FSU, Miami, Clemson, and UNC are going to try everything in their power to tear their way out of the ACC well before the grant of rights is up. Either that or we’re throwing Wake and BC off a cliff to up our per school payouts. But our conference is probably dead in the water.

I’ve been thinking for a while we needed to get to the BIG, but if they’re going all the way to the west coast, we may find ourselves one of the schools left out of the major power realignment. There are many more attractive dance partners on the dance floor than us right now.

The good news is there’s good hoops on the other side of all this. Good hoops seems to survive pretty well outside of the Power 5.

It’s just a pain in the ass to have the deck reshuffled so often. Always seems like it’s football that’s forcing these wacky changes.

Ryan/Board want us to be as Ivy as possible, as evidenced by decision to require all 2nd years to live in dorms in the future. Wouldn’t be surprised if we do not end up in the football super conferences

There good hoops until it’s obvious that there’s a Super League (expanded BIG and SEC) and everyone else, as opposed to just a P5 that’s better but not a whole different tier of the sport like there is now. If we aren’t one of the like 50 teams taken into the super conferences, our ability to recruit and compete will just be slowly sapped away.

I mean I’ll still watch, but I just hate that we are headed in this direction.

Which is so interesting because at the same time we are droping 8 figures on this new football facility. Maybe it will have an emphasis on Olympic sports as well?

I think these moves are not going to destroy football but rather show UVA football for what it truly is rather than what some of us hope it is.

Basketball will be fine. Worst comes to worse we will be independent or like UConn/Cincinnati when they were in the American East.

If Virginia, UNC, Duke and GT go to the B1G and CU, FSU, UM and NCSU go to the SEC, that’s over half the conference. Could those 8 vote the GOR out of existence and leave Wake, VT, UL, Pitt, Cuse and BC to rejoin the Big East if they’ll even take them? Because when I think ACC, those are the 6 schools I’m imagining. With only Wake left as an original member.

Take relief in the thought that in the next 5-10 yrs there will be no Big10 or SEC. There will be a D1 Super league for football (likely basketball too) that will feature 30ish teams separated by conference. And then the other football schools will be free to realign as they feel.

It’s not as important in basketball considering the NCAA tourny will likely have 80 teams before it’s all said and done.

But are we actually more attractive to the super conferences than Pitt, VT, and Syracuse? I’m not so sure.

yes - I assume at that level you start to look at how much $$$ the alums have. And UVA’s crushes those other places
