So we traded 3 for 2? Perfect…
Lets see … over the course of 60 possessions and mix in 15 turnovers each … that’s a 45 point win…
Uh…The play that HnT linked was a Kihei 2. They got an and 1 on the other end.
Sure but that play set up the rest of the game where the Heel bigs were lost trying to guard Huff and Hauser.
the duo combined for 35 points and 17 rebounds on 7/11 shooting from three land.
Can you get a breakdown of first half of year vs second half of 21-22? He seemed to be much more active in second half of season on offense especially in late shot clock situations which seemed to be a shift from pretty much Kihei or Gardner getting those duties up until then.
Whoever does get late shot clock duties will inevitably see their offensive efficiency decline vs what they are actually worth unless they are just incredible players.
But Reece seemed to make a bunch of good decisions/plays, and sometimes you just need to tell a guy to shoot and attack the rim more when he is a pass-first player. I still sense overwhelming leashed-up untapped potential in Reece vs. “we’ve seen everything he’s got and if he did it more often his stuff would just get swatted because the defenders would be ready for it”
Reece is going to have a highlight poster dunk over at least one big in the coming years and probably this year imo. Like when brogdon started doing it, it will be sort of a surprise. But then it will keep happening. Because he will know he is that type of player.
If we ever go back to using a true sophomore who is under 6 feet tall 90%+ of the time in those late shot clock situations again, I might miss a few games that year.
Not on KenPom. I think you can do it on Torvik, somehow. KenPom does do a conf. only breakdown: 15.6 / 15.3. So it was actually lower in conference.
I also have in my brain that usage went up later in the year, but it may have been low early on in the conference.
Okay, here’s the Torvik data (toggle the choice to “Usage” / default is O-rating)
It tacks up slightly over the last few games or so.
The ACC games don’t include the 4 post season games though.
Kadin didn’t make vecenie’s top 20 bigs, or potential breakout guys, but a commenter asked:

Any thoughts on UVA’s Kadin Shedrick as a potential breakout candidate?

Absolutely could have been a pick. I am a huge fan of his upside in terms of rim protection and his potential as a screen and roll player
Too hard for people to follow teams closely - you look at Kadin and say “slow developing, maybe won’t ever reach his pick but has great physicals.”
Or you could say “at this point in his career, one of Tony’s most productive big men and lost a year due to on and off illnesses”
And then he lost a potential offensive development year to [warning: negative backward-looking sentiment incoming] that terrible offense we were running last year, that featured bad spacing for Shedrick, almost no pick and roll opportunities, and almost no opportunities for him to show off his somewhat decent shooting range. If anyone wondered why I got so annoyed at things last year, it’s not just that it was not particularly good for last year; it’s that the year was a missed opportunity to develop the things we will need for our next run. Rant over.
Yep Shedrick was productive last year with a bad offense and a defense adjusting to two new starters. So many questions for this year but Shedrick should be ready to make a leap and that leap will be compounded by how a bunch of other things play out (are Dunn and Bond ready to contribute on defense, does McKneely play so we have overall bigger more athletic lineups etc). Shedrick looked like a giraffe sometimes but not all of it was his fault with the breakdowns we would see
I also want Shedrick to be good bc he was the first HGN Twitter recruitment I followed
Enough with the backward-looking negativity! I’m trying to enjoy my Friday morning coffee after that delightfully impressive performance by our football team last night.
The good news is that we are going to crush the Terps at JPJ this weekend.
He’s gonna get a 15-yard penalty for that.
I don’t think Shedrick would need to jump to block a kicker fortunately
This joke will keep on giving. Free laughs for days
Would have to find the tweet, but Sam singled out Shedrick last year when talking about bigs with NBA potential. Surprised he didn’t make the list, but he has thrown praise toward Shedrick before.
Could someone please remind me: with whom does Virginia have a closed scrimmage this year besides Maryland? I’ve seen precious little discussion of these events. Of course, I’ve probably been looking in the wrong places.
Yeah, vague memory of that, too. The list I linked was college performance, not draft potential, but in Sam’s recent “bigs” draft pod, Kadin didn’t come up.
I think Kadin and Reece are kind of in similar places w/r/t pro potential: everyone knows who they are and are waiting for that potential to become something.
I believe it’s Maryland at JPJ this Saturday and @ UConn next weekend.
Some nuggets were in VIP after the game last year; hoping for the same this year.
UConn.
Thanks to all!
