Back to Papi: I forgot Tuesday is a mandatory day off now, for Election Day (I think), so maybe Papi would miss only one practice or so.

Someone help me out here, because I’ve somehow missed this news. Papi is going to miss one of our games to go maul face for his national team which is ranked #4 in the world, and yet many are writing off his potential contributions this for a uva team that is probably NIT bound again? Something about that doesn’t make sense to me.

He doesn’t play much for them… this was last year…

Its all good until Papi mauls himself and misses the yr with an injury he picked up in garbage time.

Ok, but still I would say he is on the Argentine national team so like I don’t know maybe he’s not terrible at basketball.

I get your rationale… but here is my counter…

I play for a village football team here in Germany. We have a first team in the 6th level of the pyramid and a second team in the 8th level (the Bundesliga is 1st). I start on the second team on the 8th level, I am not good enough for the 6th level, but sometimes I get called up to sit on the bench for the first team when they need bodies…

He’s good at basketball and that’s why I want him in Charlottesville honing his craft.

Edit: I’m all for guys repping their national team. Having done it I fully get the honor. But from the selfish Uva side i rather see Papi build chemistry with his UVa teammates. If he was going go Arg for a camp and extended tournament that would be a different story.

I think it’s also possible that

(1) Caffaro is improved and a pretty solid center AND
(2) his role on the team won’t be massive AND
(3) going and playing on the national team is a good “networking” opportunity for an overseas pro career after Charlottesville

In other words, he could be pretty good. But if it is obvious that Kadin is the starter and that Caffaro and Traudt are battling for 10-15 minutes of backup time at the 5, he may find a lot of utility playing in a setting where he can show off for a different audience

Argentina has two games scheduled coming up - so are we talking here in the first few games for Caffaro?

Perhaps he put some hand creme on and now has soft hands.

Stop mountaining out of the mole hill. The article states very clearly why they want him for that particular game, in addition CTB has said before that he won’t deny guys the opportunity to represent their country. Pretty sure Papi is loved on the team and the guys probably support this 100%. And yes, the reality is Papi’s PT this year is gonna be down w Traudt and BVP. Continued exposure on the National team also helps his pro prospects in South America.

I think loyalty to country, in Papi’s case is Argentina, trumps loyalty to a college.

And this cooperative approach is good for Tony if he wants to recruit another top Argentina player one day and also other countries see how he handled it as well. What if there’s another top New Zealand player like Kody???

I’m leaving now, exit stage left!!

Tony has always showed a desire to provide balance with stuff outside the basketball program. He changed his practice schedule for a whole semester once so that Brogdon could take a class that was required for his master’s. Frankly, that’s one reason (of many) that I’m glad he’s our coach instead of some psycho like Musselman.

@Galileo24 @Foresthoo so you think Farabello is gonna play? My guess is no. Is that meaningful? My guess is it means he’s important to Creighton and wants to stay there. Doesn’t mean he values Creighton over his country? I don’t think so. (Or, if he shows up, then I guess I’m wrong.)

My view - stated already, missing a couple practices and traveling day of game for game #2 (I assume, since the DR game is Thursday) could be no indication of Papi’s role on the team or some indication or a big indication.

But assuming it’s “no indication” which is what you seem to be advocating seems to indicate you are assuming information that you don’t yet know.

I’ll stop now because I get (wrongly) accused of belaboring things, when what I’m actually doing is charity work: trying to teach you all why my obviously correct takes are obviously correct.

Tbh, to the extent this is meaningful at all, it tells us more about how Papi views his role than how Tony views Papi’s role and Tony’s view on outside stuff.
