Recruiting Rundown 8/17

Wonder if Banchero takes Duke out of the race for Houstan? They are both listed as PF.

2 different players…

Houstan is sort of Duke’s backup plan for Patrick Baldwin. Banchero could guard 2-5 I think, almost positionless.

Are we a serious player for Houstan HGN?

Probably not. Barely started.

Duke is probably 100% texting Keels saying “hey you watching the Portland game?” given that they have been trying to push the Gary Trent Jr comparison even though he barely developed at Duke, ended up being picked in the 2nd round and had to develop in the g league, etc…

But Gary Trent’s game NOW is very similar to Keels (Gary Trent in college was a very different player) and they were ranked very similarly out of HS.

Maryland mod on Murray, seems to be a lot of fuzzy info on this one:

Maryland is going hard after New Zealand standout Taine Murray, a big-time prospect who’s down to the Terps, Virginia and Stanford. Murray is almost sure to enroll in college in December according to a source with knowledge of his plans, so he could play for someone this season. He’s declined to receive pay from his current team in order to retain his eligibility and play American college basketball.

Thanks for sharing. I thought Gregg himself had mentioned Cal as a school that had come on strong (and likely surpassed UVA since he doesn’t seem to have an offer). So I’m surprised they weren’t mentioned here.

I think Evans is generating a lot of content, but I imagine accuracy is a little lower since he’s not rubbing elbows at AAU events this summer and getting the in person detail.

Is it possible we are serious contender here and trying to close the deal in stealth mode? No reason for the staff to confirm an offer has been made to any recruiting gurus and article says Gregg has been very tight lipped.

247 article mentioned the 4 schools recruiting him hardest is Oregon, Oregon State, Arizona, and Cal. No need to recruit in stealth mode given its publically known we were recruiting him. This is just Corey having old info (possibly who knows)

Man that is the ultimate example of being a slave to your sources. Even when publicly reported facts get in the way, still stick to the story. Murray isn’t enrolling early.

“Taine plans on going to study in the USA and that’s probably going to happen around August or September of 2021,” said Shamir.

“Having said that, we view him as a future Breaker, we see him as a guy who can become a starter for the Breakers down the road.

"Due to the circumstances surrounding Covid and the postponed NB21 season not starting until December at the earliest, Taine will be able to complete a full season with us.

Keep in mind the Hoos already have a 2021 recruit in the fold in transfer Trey Murphy from Rice. He grew from 6-4 as a high school senior to 6-8 now. In 2 years at Rice he is a career 39% 3 point shooter and 78% FT shooter. He will have an entire season of practice this year before hitting the floor in November of 2021. He is likely to slot right into the Hunter, Key, Hauser spot and will have 2 years of eligibility. It is highly likely they have another 2021 in house already too in Carson McCorkle. With the experience in the back-court now he is likely to redshirt this year. Likely rotation lineup in 2021-22 with no additional signings - some guys playing time at multiple spots.

  1. Clark, Beekman
  2. Morsell, McCorkle, Beekman, Abdur-Rahim
  3. Abdur-Rahim, McKoy, Stattmann
  4. Murphy, Shedrick, McKoy
  5. Shedrick, Caffaro

Looking for Shedrick to be an important part of the puzzle that year

I think you’ll see Shedrick mainly as a 5. Remember Tony will play small, and I’d foresee a lineup of Clark / Beekman / Morsell (2 of that 3)
coupled with Murphy and Abdur-Rahim - both get a lot of minutes, and finally either Shedrick or Caffaro.
Wouldn’t shock me to see them go even smaller against certain opponents and substitute McKoy for the big guys.
I’d also guess that there very well may be another rotational piece for 21-22 that we don’t even know the name of yet.
All that said - if you add in one/two or even three (can’t see 3) 2021 recruits, there certainly will be some logjams that could create other changes to the puzzle.

Oh yea, definitely going to be competition for playing time with some new recruits but that’s a good thing. I understand that small ball with versatile players is where we are headed but there is always gonna be a need for a rim protector. Shedrick will probably play the 5 because of need but I believe he has a big upside and will be versatile himself. IMHO
