Yep. Long ago. Please continue to enjoy Arby’s.
i felt this
From trilly: “ Tre Singleton update: UVA crushed it on his visit and they’re now right there with Northwestern. Expecting a decision soon.”
Everything I’ve seen suggest that Ament won’t be making a decision until spring. I think that this is very smart. He can wait until the college season ends to see the changes which will invariably happen in the basketball landscape. Whether Virginia will be in the discussion in March is a complete unknown, IMO, but I am unsure that it can said, with certainty, which programs will be. Among other things, I don’t think he has to worry about any schools running out of scholarships. The transfer portal has pretty much eliminated that as a realistic concern. He can wait.
Not giving up on Ament. Maybe it’s like a 1% or 0.1% chance or 0.01% chance now or whatever, but the formula is this:
- more fun and better UVa offense and media buzz about it
- Boozers to Duke
- We have a nice season but still one where there is a cap based on top end play (no NBA prospects on this team, at least as of now, for this coming draft)
- “In the ballpark” NIL offer
- Tony wants to play the OAD game (most of all - more or less promise PT)
If all that stuff happens, I’d say we have a meaningful minority chance. But I don’t think all that stuff will happen and the last bullet is where I’m most skeptical.
I would actually add, Saunders having a crazy year and becoming a first round pick. Would open up a very obvious spot for Ament and give even more evidence that Tony pumps out wings to the NBA.
Also Flagg and co underperforming may take some of the shine off Scheyer.
That’s an interesting one. I don’t put that in a high degree of likelihood. I think at his size, he’d have to be a really good shooter.
I also meant to add: two or three of Dre, RD, or TM3 popping off would really help, too.
Agree that for a guy of his caliber, there’s a lot less risk waiting until spring. Some blue blood / new blood contender is going to have a plug-and-play spot available with appropriate NIL. Maybe that’s us, Duke, UConn, Kentucky, Bama, whatever.
And keep in mind, the Portal will have a lot fewer top-end players available due to the sunsetting of the COVID-year-eligible player pool, effectively both the 2020 and 2021 HS classes are running out of eligibility next summer (minus a few who redshirted along the way), so as a result there may be more premium on a top end HS recruit than there has been the last few years when there were hundreds more proven grad students available in the Portal.
Point being, Ament is making a smart business decision. I say we just get Singleton this week instead and have a high-end multi-year pipeline in place in classic Tony fashion.
I mean, other than early PT and geographic proximity (and I’m not discounting the value of either), plus maybe some debate on the Urban vs College Town vibe, let’s not be shocked that UVA had a much better pitch to offer Singleton than Northwestern did. Both “New Ivies” for the academic pitch, but we can point to both the multitude of banners in JPJ’s rafters as well a half-dozen comparable forwards in the NBA, to say nothing of the quality of facilities and fan support that go with them, that Northwestern can’t come close to.
Totally get he may pick NU for the PT and distance, but beyond that Tony had a layup of a pitch.
Frankly, surprised Purdue isn’t more in play, kind of a nice in-between, good academics, winning tradition, has had some success with forwards, and right at home.
My decision on this would be: do I have to play for Chris Collins? If yes, then I’ll go to the other one
Bashing Chris Collins has gone out of style. Let’s bring it back!
Chris is a great dude actually
How are we in a recruiting conversation for Nate Ament with all the blue bloods while simultaneously being in a recruiting battle for Tre Singleton with Northwestern?!?
The whole idea of proximity with Singleton is being overblown, IMO. If Louisville was the main comp then I get it, or maybe even Purdue, which is under 3 hours from Jeffersonville.
But Evanston, Illinois is roughly a 5 hour drive. That’s not exactly “local.”
He might still go to Northwestern, but if he’s down to us and them, distance is well down the list of considerations and there’s probably not enough difference there to be overly concerned with.
And hell, we play in Louisville every year, which will be like a home game for his family (and us traditionally).
Came in to say this! I think it is more likely than the consensus seems to be. Tony has a great track record with guys in his mold. Agree with Haney he’d need to show off a great stroke, but I don’t think that’s out of the question.
My personal overall odds of him leaving for the draft are somewhere around 15-20%? Which I think are relatively significant and seem to be a good bit higher than the consensus.
Wait, did you say he’s from Jeffersonville? How could he not go to Mr. Jefferson’s University in the ‘ville?
That’s good to hear. But it’s no reason not to bash someone.
Cant argue there hahahah
I’ve also heard Jay Williams is a nice guy, personally.
How do I process that? I don’t. I discard that info and picture him wearing his jacket and mock turtleneck like he’s about to teach me Sartre and I continue my 4th grade hate.
Or was it a turtleneck sweater? Even worse…
Also good dude yes
