Recruiting - Trick-or-Treat October

Yeah he’s done several of these interviews. Seems to be a friend’s show.

I would still like to get him. Maybe I’m in the minority but not giving up hope.

Kaufman discusses his commitment. Says the biggest factors are being able to win an NCAA and go to the NBA. Doesn’t sound like it will be IU or Purdue going off that…

I was just reading that. He talks about the best playing style for him, which in the past he’s said he believes is Purdue. I don’t know why.. It’s hard to rectify Purdue or Indiana as the choice when he says NBA development is the key over and over. But people can twist logic to suit what they want to do. Really everything he’s said there are the same talking points he’s conditioned himself to repeat for the last year, so I don’t know if there’s much to read into it.

Literally no talk about Kaufman from UVA people, but I guess there wouldn’t be at this point. About the only reason to be hopeful is that nothing solid has leaked out. Everyone assumes it’s Purdue or Indiana because their media sources say it’s so, but of course they benefit from that narrative.

One big tea leaf, is we are not recruiting anyone like him.We chose not to offer Gregg and we haven’t gotten involved with anyone new since Kaufman has announced his commitment date. UNC just offered Walker and is evaluating Amzil, Indiana is recruiting several others, Purdue has a commitment from Furst. Houstan is 6’-8" also but they are two totally different players.

One more thing! Prospects are starting to recognize UVA as an elite developmental program. This you will see continue to play out. Getting JAR says a lot to future prospects and even some high school coaches. Maybe not with Kaufman, Keels, or Houstan but you will see it.

I’m pinning my hopes on his wanting to win national championship comment. He has an opportunity to join the reigning champs for the past 18 months. Boy does that sound good to say.

HGN I’m only asking this for clarification, as I know it’s a broken record at this point. A poster on the Nova board commented yesterday about having a source close to the PVI program who told him that UVA is out of the race for Keels and it’s between Dook and Nova. JO on our 247 board has refuted this for a month or two now, saying that it’s between Dook and UVA. Is there any new info regarding his recruitment that would give either of these reports any validity??? Obviously I’d trust JO’s judgement more than a random person on a 247 board, but was just wondering.

I’ve said all along that I don’t want Kaufman to commit unless he commits to really committing to UVA

A month ago I believe the majority thought Taine Murry would choose Stanford…So when I hear people reading too deeply into Kaufmans recruitment, I take it with a huge grain of salt. We obviously have the best basketball program compared to IU and Perdue. Obviously they have some advantages in Kaufmans recruitment like geography…Still I think we are in a good position for a commitment.

No matter where this young man chooses, he will make a choice that he thinks is the right one. He has done his due diligence, is honest with his answers, and has handled his recruitment very intelligently. I would follow his career wherever he chooses at this point.

Rabjohns (IU insider) believes none of the coaching staffs have heard or know Kaufman’s decision but I am moreso in HGN’s camp that no one was told no but someone had to have been told yes by now.

Yeah, the version from our side is it’s UVA vs Duke for Keels. That’s actually been consistent since he put out the final 3. And it’s came from what I would call different factions, so that kind of solidifies it for me that it represents what the coaches believe. They could be wrong of course. I doubt Keels has ever said hey Villanova is out. It’s just more their read. Either way, they definitely think they’re still in serious contention.

Daniel, I agree 100%! I think, you will see prospects who are attracted to our program take on some of the identity of our coach. These analytical, private, close to the vest recruitments remind me of how I would think CTB would handle his. Remember, we were just complaining about this very characteristic of our program.

That may be what Keel’s insiders are saying and I have zero inside knowledge. However, I will be shocked if UVA is even in his top two at this point. That’s all I should say, probably.

Ok, was just wondering. I imagine it’s exhausting for both you and JO to constantly get asked about his recruitment, especially since there’s seemingly so much conflicting info out there.

Nah doesn’t bother me at all. The story from UVA people definitely clashes with the outside version on Keels. An irrefutable UVA source said last week, “We’re right there”.

Seems if it’s Indiana there’s a 99% chance it leaks before Friday. If it gets to Friday without a flood of IU crystal balls I’m betting on Purdue and counting the Hoos as having a chance.

I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s what our people are being told. However, it sounds like all three are receiving similar leaks and info. This is not to disrespect you, Keels or anyone but does kinda jive with whats going on.

Based on that logic why are you so quick to write off UVA and not Niova or Duke if everyone is ‘receiving similar leaks and intel’?

Or maybe he’s just still seriously trying to decide? The one thing Keels and his family have all been adamant on was they really wanted to be able to take the official visits before deciding. I truly believe a decision would’ve been made in the summer one way or another had visits been allowed. Don’t mean any disrespect I just don’t get the negativity it’s potentially the biggest decision of his life as he has major pro potential.
