Man he got drilled
I did go back and look at all of Smith’s makes and misses (except for the first miss before the broadcast switched to our game). 12 misses and 7 makes, plus 2 of 4 FT’s (both were fouls on Reece).
Of the 12 misses: Reece defended 4 (including a fast break where the miss was more caused by BVP, and a shot-clock desperation catch-and-shoot attempt from near mid-court where Reece was in the vicinity). Kihei defended 5 of the misses. Armaan, BVP, and McKneely defended 1 each.
Of the 7 makes: Reece was primary defender on 2 downhill layups (where he got screened) and a 3-ptr. Kihei gave up a jumper and a 3-ptr. Another 3-ptr was on Jayden who had left Smith to help on Joiner who had beaten Reece on a dribble drive and kick to Smith. The last one was a fast break with no defender (initiated off a missed layup by Reece that was blocked). And then there were the 4 FT attempts from 2 fouls on Reece.
So it was a mixture of successful and unsuccessful defense from a bunch of guys on Smith. That is what I would expect out of a team that plays good help defense. Your characterization that Reece shut Smith down and others did not is inaccurate.
I don’t think I said others did not… we just differ on opinion of terminology I guess …
Smith had an 89.4 offensive rating on the night…on the season he’s at 108.2
He scored 19 points on 23 possessions.
Only had 3 games all year where he shot it more… and he scored 32, 33, and 21 in those games…
There were also multiple possessions where he gave up trying to make a play because he was tired and frustrated.
p.s. - also it’s nice to be able to rotate other guys onto a team’s best guard … tires him out even more and can give guys like Reece a break from guarding him … Armaan played really good defense in his minutes too.
No doubt he was tired. I bet every team feels exhausted, if not frustrated, after playing us. But his stats in just about every category were as consistent with his season averages as one game can get (FG, FGA, FG%, 2P, 2PA, 2P%, 3P, 3PA, 3P%, Ast, Stl)….
We didn’t shut him down as much as held him to normal production and it was as much other guys as it was Reece. They all did well. The key to the game was getting Burns in foul trouble and shutting down Joiner. Other than Morsell, who was very good, Smith had no help.
was averaging 19 points a game on 16 FGA.
Scored 19 on 20 attempts vs UVA …
And yes Joiner was awful and most of that was due to our defense - mostly Kihei - at least to start.
You do you … that’s cool …
If I’m coaching and the other team’s leading scorer gets his season average on 4 more attempts than usual and only got 4 or 5 decent looks all game? I would be satisfied.
And I’d be ecstatic with the 2/14 for Joiner.
And I largely discount Smith and Joiner’s 1 turnover apiece because a ton of their shots are effectively turnovers.
I’m guessing the no call on Reece’s dunk could have been one of those that the ref would call a foul if he missed the dunk. The wait and see what happens call always annoys me.
Tears for Wolves
Strange with all the flagrants etc now. But agree with you there. Smack Reece!! In the head 10feet up, no big deal ha
Not any quality ref… that is always a foul and since it was to the face and also an airborne player … could have easily been a Flagrant 1…
Simply an athlete outrunning old guys who were out of position or have slow eyes or both
Smith has 19.1 FGA per 40 minutes on the season. He played 40 minutes last night with 20 FGA. I agree a bad shot is worth a TO. He had 1 TO last night instead of his normal 2.7 per 40 minutes, so that more than covers the extra shot he took.
Look, you’re the one that prides yourself on relentless stats to try to prove often arcane points. You made a generalization that Smith got shut down by Reece and challenged me to go look it up in the replay, which I took the time to do. The stats and the replay back up what I said. You’re quibbling over small statistical differences to reduce it to a matter of opinion, but you’re wrong on those too. It’s a silly argument to have all in all, but I guess I was waiting for you just to say, “ok I guess I was wrong after you did the research I said you should do” but I reckon that’s never gonna happen.
You’re right. My bad
Carolina refs
Just watch Reece on this play … don’t watch anyone else … the speed and awareness to recover and help from where he was and at 6-3 block a 7 footer - crazy I tell ya… just plum nuts!
Reece at 57 (second to last pick in the draft) from Sam Vecenie
Is this a new Givony or old Givony? That’s pretty much where he had Reece on his board a couple months ago.
It’s the first 2024 mock, so Givony seems to think he’ll come back
Oh yeah, missed that. Yup, with Dillingham.
he GONE (in 2024)
