One could argue he was better at Rice than at Virginia. Was a 50-50 90 guy at Virginia and still only averaged 11 points. Basically sat in the corner and waited for passes and occasionally cut back door for dunks. Just a waste of a talented player his one year.

Almost identical points per game adjusted for pace between his last year at Rice and first at Virginia. And that is considering his junior year at Virginia was on a top 20 offense with two other future NBA guys, compared to his sophomore year at Rice playing for the 110th best offense and barely a top 200 team. Seems about right when you make that leap.

Here let me say it again. We had a guy with 50 40,90 shooting splits who was athletic enough to compete in an NBA slam dunk competition average 11 points a game.

Did you know we had an incoming freshman who competed in the McDonald’s All-American game slam dunk competition? This dude only dunked four times while he played for the Hoos! Pathetic.
Did you know we had a guy who would go on to lead the NBA in 3PT% twice in his NBA career? But at Virginia, the best he could do was finish 78th best in the nation. Terrible.
Did you know the guy who was our highest rated incoming recruit according to 247 plays for Georgia? Embarrassing.
What am I going on about? The hell if I know. Like my guy Oscar Madison here, I’m just throwing spaghetti at the wall to see if anything sticks.

He’s not wrong… our system neuters the best of athletes… Main reason I never bought into “this is the most athletic team we’ve had under Bennett” argument. It doesn’t matter, we don’t get to see it.

It doesn’t matter that his argument is absolutely bonkers so long as it paints Tony Bennett and our program in a bad light. He tried to tee up a question so he could dunk on Tony and our system and didn’t like the answers, so he had to change the argument lol

I was contemplating answering with Hunter, maybe Anderson (but GLeague Anderson was really good). And definitely Reuter and James Johnson (who were just not good anywhere). But then I realized what he was setting up to say, so decided not to give him that softball.

To be fair, no one would come to Virginia to showcase their offensive abilities. They come to get better at defense for the next level … one could easily say Murphy did not get better on offense at Virginia, but definitely got better at defense …. Murphy even said out loud that that was the reason why he came to Virginia …one could say Hauser got better at defense at Virginia. And is now good enough on Defense with theCeltics to see the floor …
Maybe the one position someone would come to Virginia for offense is point guard

This is very valid. That’s why I think a strong offensive skill set should be a non negotiable when it comes to recruiting.
Get good offensive players, teach them how to defend, and then you’ll have a great team!
I trust us to make scorers into good defenders more than I trust us to make good defenders good scorers.

This is how our National championship team was built. Guy, Jerome, Hunter…all guys who were known for offense out of high school. Man I miss those days🥺

Back to Dunn’s jump shot, watch him here against aTm in late November at the 17 second mark. Shot clock was at 10 - so it wasn’t an urgent heave. But he shot this in rhythm, held the follow through and the shot was nothing but net.
Not sure what has changed for him; is just confidence? Or has he changed something mechanically.
If he could play the 3 and hit 30%+ 3-pointers that could do wonders for his/our offensive game. Like what he did at the 3:33 mark because they had to respect the 3-ball
