Again I’m in agreement with @UVApride7 here. The big difference between Dunn vs Salt/Key is the surrounding cast. Dunn is fine in his current state if he is surrounded by scorers. Also Key could shoot and score a little bit, the injury knocked him off track. Also Salt’s ability to set screens was a massive asset.
Dunn would be great to have next year, but you still have more of the usual awkward roster management taking place. It’s likely best for Dunn and the team for everyone to move on.
If Dunn were to come back to improve draft stock, I just don’t buy that we are the system or current roster to do it.
I said the same thing about Reece last year. Glad he came back to our team. Was probably wrong on that front in some ways but his offensive numbers and opportunities would have been better in most other high major systems.
I’d be curious if Reece returned to college ball next year if it would be with UVA. Not even out of spite but to make more money and win a championship.
We’ve pretty much always had someone at the 4 that was an offensive threat - Gill, Hunter, Mamadi at times, Hauser, etc - I think Dunn not being a threat caused us the most problems. They were able to press out on shooters without paying the price. Obviously Minor and BB not being threats just compounded it.
Feel like the breakdown is that we sometimes have offensive threats at the 4, and sometimes don’t. But you’re more likely (generally) to have an offensive threat at the 4 than the 5. So if you’re 4 isn’t much of a threat, you will need an offensive threat at the 5 (not that common for us) or you really need great threats at the three guard/wing spots.
Better yet, you need positional versatility in the frontcourt. Akil Mitchell worked because he could play next to Mike Tobey or Anthony Gill. They were all relatively interchangeable. Dunn and Groves have complementary skillsets but they couldn’t really be played together most of the time.
me thinks Dunn’s best fit in the NBA would be to Denver where he could serve as a long term solution to the dunking spot in Denver’s offense once Gordon moves on.
Naw, not 10 ppg to be honest. He needs to develop touch to get anywhere that close or if he had Ty, Kyle or Hunter he would never shoot it. But since we do not have them he needs to be able to hit.
I’ll give you Wilkins, but Mamadi was the team’s leading scorer his last year and shot almost 37% from three. Key didn’t shoot well, but he handled it like a guard and got to the rim all the time.
I mean, I have to imagine the more NBA teams really dig into his tape the more he’s going to drop. He wasnt just raw offensively, he could barely do anything beyond wide open dunks and put backs. He couldn’t take his man off the dribble, he couldn’t back guys down and finish in the post, he couldn’t hit jump shots consistently. He air balled like five free throws. And he got worse when the competition and pressure stepped up later in the season.
The older he gets, the lower his stock goes. It’s not getting any better. If he returns, he is essentially committing to being a 4-year college guy and trying to make it as an UDFA once he graduates.
