Is there still room to take the incredibly brave and going-out-there-on-a-limb stance that from a strictly on-court perspective, bringing back the guy many think should be the National DPOY is much more good than bad? He got modestly better on offense from last season to this season, by all accounts is a great worker, even another modest increase in offense combined with his defense is a pretty damn good college player.
My position is that there are many RD situations that could annoy you. Why limit yourself to one?
The best thing Trey did was make it known pretty quickly he was going pro (though it did leaves some fans pretty salty). I’d worry about Dunn testing the waters a while then ultimately leaving, which would leave us in a hole for replacements
That is the most likely scenario, I am afraid. But, that is life in college basketball today.
Let Dunn go pro and give me Eli. He will be a much better player. Dunn has the offensive skills of a division 98 player (John Thurston ex jmu coach actually owns this comment) and makes so many mistakes game in and game out that we’d be better served with a better all around player. I expect Eli to make a major jump in the off-season and will pass him as a college player. Of course, the bar is really low considering he air balled a four foot jump shot. Stacy Augmon was Steph Curry on the offensive end compared to Dunn.
I don’t think Dunn is a great offensive player, but I think he’s better than what he’s shown. He can’t succeed in our current offensive system though.
He’s a good ball handler for his size. Needs more opportunities to get downhill. More in rhythm shooting.
(Could also say the same for Eli…)
People will see Dunns skills once he gets to an offense that is open… Lively comes
To mind for Dallas.
In an open offense he might not air ball free throws anymore
Gotta say, not exactly the NIL partner I would have guessed would be likely for RD, but hey, get that $$$ my man:
RD at 25 in Sam V’s mock
Not being DPOY was most egregious decision in college hoops in years
Range is late lottery to late first, depending on workouts
Sam knows he sux at offense, RD haters
Late 1st is kind of worst case scenario for all parties, no? And we might be out recruiting the portal under the assumption Dunn is gone, but whoever we’re pitching is likely looking for starters’ minutes which is no guarantee
Sam said that was teams’ view. Which means at least some teams as of now think he’s late lottery-ish, which I actually think points towards shorter decision. But I’m bad at predictions
Really hope RD has a phenomenal tournament (multiple games please) and moves up draft boards for his sake. He’s a fine young man and I want him to succeed.
Hope he plays with reckless abandon on the defensive end and on both ends of the glass. And hope he gets MANY dunks.
Play well and go get yours Ryan.
Go Hoos. Play free and with JOY. Have fun. Beat CSU.
Get yours RD! Love it
Yes, I agree with the sentiment and I want to see RD play free and have a great tournament. But I don’t want to see him be any more reckless on defense. I think his worst quality on defense right is when he plays out of control and gets caught biting on fakes and being over eager rather than letting the game play out in front of him and trusting his elite athleticism and skill to make up the difference.
That said, late first round feels about right for RD. Hoping for the best for him.
Yes to all of this. Early in the season it felt like he was better at taking better calculated risks. He’s still a second year, so it all makes sense. But need him to continue what he’s doing and just play a smidge smarter on the margins. We’ll need every ounce of it.
Exactly and I know I’m hard on RD but he’s also supposed to be a first round lottery pick so he gets a harsher grading scale than a Blake.
Tonight feels like a game where Ryan’s elite athleticism really shows itself. Now if that means anything to our team success, who knows. These games are always so tough. Everyone belongs at this point and everyone knows it’s win or seasons over.
This may be the most excited I’ve been for an opportunity since 2016. Go Hoos.
Lots of bad Dunn takes in the other threads; takes insinuating it may be beneficial for us if he goes pro. Spoiler: it won’t. Dunn isn’t significantly worse on offense than Salt, or a Key. Dunn with a Ty, Kyle and Hunter surrounding him is a 10 PPG player, consistently getting cuts to the basket or alley oops.
Ok but the issue is we don’t have Ty, Guy, and Dre and realistically we NEED a big time scorer at the wing next year. If you’re implying that we need someone on the wing to play alongside Dunn, that’s great but where is the scholarship coming from and what is the pitch you’re working with?
I would be happy with Dunn coming back next season but then you’ve gotta build a roster around him with pieces we don’t actively have, it becomes a difficult puzzle to solve.
