What is Echols? And what is Scholars?

The Scholars are an AAU team @Marktykobe used to coach.

Yep! I was an Echols Scholar, messed around for a bit with random assortment of classes, but ended up getting our a declared major

I’m not worried about the admissions side. I think the in-residence requirement is hurting and could be fixed.

Impressive man but I cant help myself so…

Thanks!

The rumor around Grounds at the time (hoo knows how accurate) was that Coach Holland wanted to name Odom his successor (and Odom wanted the job - enough to say no to Wake), but Jim Copeland insisted they would have a national search instead, so Coach Holland encouraged Odom to take the Wake job as a “bird in the hand.” And then Copeland proceeded to fumble Barnes and someone else before returning to JJ.

Edited to add: Admittedly a rumor, but fit very well with Copeland’s general approach to the job in general and basketball in particular - building another football weight room when the BBall team needed major facilities upgrades, and had for years

Was it Gillen?

Mike Montgomery

Who apparently agreed in principle, then was told he was choice 2 when Barnes “accepted the offer,” then wouldn’t take the job after Barnes reneged.

Odom was also reportedly approached (remember this is one year after Copeland wouldn’t offer him the job of coach in waiting and after his first year in Winston-Salem) and also reportedly said no.

There was one other known name involved whose candidacy faded after Copeland latched onto Barnes, but I can’t remember who it was. Edited to add: Barry Parkhill, apparently, who wasn’t willing to wait on Barnes’s decision

Google AI says Gillen was mentioned at the time, but I don’t remember him being mentioned in connection with the job that cycle. Apparently he was contacted, but didn’t interview - if old newspaper reports of the search can be trusted.

He should have just quit 2 weeks before the season started

Perhaps… and we hired a coach that had the self-discipline to STFU while he played in the tourney, and not publicly air his grievances with his AD and NIL situation…

We’ve never been successful because they were paying players to come, and we were not. Basketball is really very simple. Get the best fucking players you can, and adjust what you run based on that. Also our best teams were laden with Juniors who left after that year. But go off.

We are not dealing in alternate universes here! The 2016 class was unmatched on the court end of story

How much is a bird in the hand worth though?

It that’s your response then you really don’t get it, and probably never will.

Oh hell, I think he made a great decision. And then he (reportedly) didn’t take the job when it was re-offered a year later, and he’s one of the legends of the ACC. I’m just bitter that he could have done it at UVa (maybe – reportedly the ballboy or whoever who turned him on to Tim Duncan was in Winston-Salem, so maybe it doesn’t happen for him if he stays home).

My comment wasn’t intended as a dig at Dave at all, it was a shot at Copeland.

If Dave Odom replaced Terry Holland, would his son be our coach today?
