🏀 Ryan Odom Transition

I will gladly accept a little “sloppiness” for aggression that results in 10-15 more shot attempts per game. No more boa constrictor offense!

Just win, baby.

Irony is VCU’s turnover rate was lower than ours last season.

Yeah. I want to see more aggression, but I don’t want to see bad shot taking and a slew of iso-ball. Those things aren’t always correlated.

My hope is that the “VCU on paper” profile is what we see – lots of ball movement, player aggression, lots of smart, open shots from the 3PT line and at the rim (i.e. high eFG rate), not a high turnover rate, and high assist rates, etc.

Aggression doesn’t have to come with chaos and bad shot selection.

Sanchez vs. Bennett.

Last year’s team was the sloppiest since the last Leitao team or first few Bennett squads.

Bradford Burgess is staying on the new VCU staff, was just announced. There had been some speculation that he would follow Odom.

I wonder why Theus was the one who stuck with Odom, and Burgess stayed

Theus was an actual recruiting assistant at vcu i believe. Burgess was on support staff

Of course I’m being totally selfish here, and not realizing this means Rick back at Louisville

He saw that we won’t have a team next year because chance Silas and maybe Eli are the only people on the team ducks

Yeah I think the VCU post makes it seem like he got promoted to actual assistant of some sort.

Me and Brad were middle school friends. Real solid dude.

Has there been any news on if Guy, Wilkins, or Coleman will be on staff next year?

Speculation that Guy can’t be added as a full time assistant until he finishes his degree (Maybe May?)

All 3 are at the final four because it’s basically a huge coaches convention.

If I had to guess, one stays in some capacity (Chase would be a second because I believe he still has a year left as a grad assistant)

Interesting to me:

  • at Utah St - Odom retained 6 players (Bean, Ashworth, Bairstow, Shulga, Dorius, Miller), even though the previous coach was right up the front range
  • at VCU - Odom retained 4 players (Jackson, Billups, Lawal, Fermin), even though the previous coach was still in the region. He promoted Darius Theus, a staff holdover from Rhoads era / former VCU player, to full assistant (he was an Asst. one year at Siena).
  • Here? Seems like Gertrude (fingers crossed), maybe Cofie (but probably not), and some walk-ons, even though the previous coaches don’t even have gigs, yet. And TBD on a UVa-related guy on the staff going forward, but the actual assistant slots are full up. I guess it’s still possible we keep Saliba, Curtis, and two of Zay/Chase/Kyle, but it doesn’t seem too likely… And there’s at least some chance that Elijah G is our ONLY Bennett era connection.

One thing I liked about Odom is that he was a “blender” at his previous stops. But it either (a) doesn’t seem to be a priority here, or (b) he wasn’t able to pull it off despite making it a priority. And my guess is (a).

Does it matter? Not if he wins!

Maybe not even that, Roberts is in the Portal too. Only Lang left of the walk ons.
