The difference in circumstances is the key I think. He took over successful programs from coaches who moved on to bigger jobs. Utah State is kinda unique culturally, easier to keep guys there. And then at VCU, the ones that could move up left.
Here youâre dealing with dejected players who feel like they got screwed over. And just the difference at the high major levelâŚeverybody has real options. I think Odom prefers to retain players and go about it that way but only on his terms, which is much harder to do in this situation.
Do walk-ons still exist? How does that work with new scholarship limit. Like could he be on the practice squad but get a roster spot if someone is injured like we did for Eli?
Itâs a good question. Probably going to differences team to team, and some shades of gray to what we think of as walk ons. Most teams wonât heave 15 players anyway, current walk ons included. But I suspect thereâs going to be levels to it in the future, scholarship walk ons vs not haha
Really was hoping Guy would stay, Think he definitely had an impact on McKneely Rohde and Dai Dai as 3pt shooters. And getting to practice against him and what not
Heard they did offer Kyle a position, and it was a âgood offerâ. He just felt like it was best to move on, sounds like he has his job elsewhere picked out. Thatâs what goes on Final Four weekend.
Reminds me a bit of Biscuit (Hagans). We want them to stay forever, but in reality, itâs good for Guy to get out there and have new coaching experiences. Itâll only help him down the line
I mean, to make a banal point, Odom should be focusing on putting together the program he wants so that UVa can win a lot of games (including in the NCAA tournament!), and if he does, the process stuff wonât matter much. And it wonât matter whether he did it with Bennett era holdovers or not.
But, at some point (not now), he does need to put some thought into good relationships with the Bennett era guys. That was one thing Tony needed to do well and did do well early on.
(And to be clear, I see HGN saying Odom did give him a good offer, so thatâs good!)
