🏀 Ryan Odom Transition

Sure… just start a new late season portal thread… or generic summer recruiting thread. The ones that were open were getting pretty long anyways. I nominate @dave92 to start it because he LOVES starting new threads…

I’ll copy and paste anyways:

Breaking down new coach Ryan Odom’s remade Virginia men’s basketball roster
GREG MADIA The Daily Progress
11 - 14 minutes

Nearly two months after his hiring at Virginia, at least the bulk of new Hoos coach Ryan Odom’s first team is in place.

More of Virginia basketball’s non-conference schedule comes into focus

North Dakota State transfer Jacari White feels he fits in UVa basketball’s new-look style

When he was introduced in March, Odom said he wanted to assemble, “a championship roster and one we’re all going to be proud of.”

He said, too, during the initial press conference, that: “You have to sign great players, but you also have to sign guys that understand their role.”

After picking up commitments from seven transfers and two high schoolers plus hitting the international market for a potential impact performer while retaining two Cavaliers from this past season’s squad, UVa has gone through an overhaul with the objective to be competitive immediately in Odom’s tenure.

With that in mind, here’s a position-by-position breakdown of the roster to this point and what roles — starter, contributor or backup — each player could fill.

GUARDS

Dallin Hall

Previous stop: BYU

Projected role: Starter

B12 BYU Men’s Basketball

Charlie Riedel, Associated Press

The skinny: Of the seven transfers new to UVa, Hall has the most significant power-conference experience. At BYU, he played in 100 games with 61 starts over the last three seasons. The 6-foot-4 veteran departed the Cougars having logged 32 double-figure scoring performances and having finished sixth in BYU history for assists per game (4.13). He’s the logical candidate to start at point guard for the Cavaliers.

Jacari White

Previous stop: North Dakota State

Projected role: Starter

The skinny: Last week, White told The Daily Progress that he feels his skill set fits the mold of players Odom has thrived with in past coaching jobs. White, a 6-foot-3 guard, comes to UVa with a career Division I 3-point shooting percentage of 40.6%. Over the last three years with the Bison, he made multiple 3s in 54 games. Given Odom likes for his teams to take a high volume of 3s — based on his VCU and Utah State teams each finishing in the top 100 nationally for 3-point attempts per game over the last four years — it’d serve Odom well to have a proven shooter like White as a starter on the floor. White averaged 17.1 points per game last season.

Malik Thomas

Previous stop: San Francisco

Projected role: Starter

San Francisco Gonzaga Basketball

Young Kwak, Associated Press

The skinny: Thomas committed to the Hoos this past Saturday, sources confirmed then to The Daily Progress, and he’s the most recent addition to the roster. He spent the last two seasons as a standout at San Francisco after beginning his career at Southern California. For the Dons, he averaged 19.9 points and 3.9 rebounds per game while earning All-West Coast Conference first-team honors this past season. The 6-foot-5 guard could become the Cavaliers’ top scoring threat considering he’s shown over the past two years, he can drive to finish at the rim with a layup or dunk and convert 3-point shots consistently. Thomas scored at least 20 points in 17 games this past season, including twice against Gonzaga.

Sam Lewis, Jr.

Previous stop: Toledo

Projected role: Contributor

The skinny: From his freshman season to this past year, Lewis made a substantial jump in playing time and production. Lewis’ minutes grew from 11.8 per game in 2023-24 to 31.4 in 2024-25. He scored 16.2 points per game this past winter compared to only 3.6 in his first campaign at Toledo. For his improvement, Lewis earned second team All-MAC honors. He should find ways to help the UVa, perhaps, off the bench as a complement to White and Thomas.

Elijah Gertrude

Previous stop: Virginia

Projected role: Contributor

The skinny: After an ACL injury caused by an accident on a scooter cost Gertrude his 2024-25 season, the expectation is Gertrude will be healthy enough to play for Odom and the Cavaliers this coming season. He averaged 3.4 points per game two years ago as a freshman. Gertrude should factor in as he becomes increasingly comfortable while coming off the injury.

Chance Mallory

Previous stop: St. Anne’s-Belfield

Projected role: Contributor

The skinny: Mallory committed to the Cavaliers initially when Tony Bennett was the coach and then backed off that decision when Bennett retired only to re-commit once Odom took the job. Mallory ranks as the 54th best prospect nationally, according to 247Sports, in its class of 2025 rankings. It won’t be easy for Mallory to carve out responsibility right away because of all the veteran guards on UVa’s roster. But in each of the last four seasons, Odom had at least nine players average double-digit minutes. And if he sticks to that, there could be room for Mallory to earn playing time.

FORWARDS

Devin Tillis

Previous stop: UC Irvine

Projected role: Starter

BWest UC Irvine UC San Diego Basketball

Ronda Churchill, Associated Press

The skinny: Tillis fits in at the 4 for the Cavaliers and should transition smoothly because he’ll come to UVa with at least some familiarity with Odom. At UC Irvine, Tillis played for Anteaters coach Russell Turner, who was a college teammate of both Odom and UVa associate head coach Griff Aldrich at Hampden-Sydney. Tillis averaged 13.7 points and 7.8 rebounds per game this past season. His ability to rebound the ball is what should help him earn a starting role upon arrival in Charlottesville.

Martin Carrere

Previous stop: VCU

Projected role: Contributor

The skinny: Last season, Carrere redshirted while playing for Odom at VCU. With a year of development under his belt plus an understanding of how Odom wants to play, Carrere has a chance to continue improving and use his already absorbed knowledge of Odom’s style to potentially play at least some minutes with UVa this coming season.

Silas Barksdale

Previous stop: Woodside High School

Projected role: Backup

The skinny: Barksdale, 86th in 247Sports’ prospect rankings for the 2025 class, flipped his commitment from VCU to UVa shortly after Odom departed VCU for UVa. Barksdale won two state championships at Woodside and was the VHSL Class 5 Player of the Year in 2024.

CENTERS

Johann Grünloh

Previous stop: Rasta Vechta (Germany)

Projected role: Starter

The skinny: During Odom’s first presser at UVa, he pointed out how he likes to recruit international players and said, “We have contacts all over. This is a global game now.” He wasted little time displaying that by landing the German big man Grünloh, who has played for the professional club Rasta Vechta and its youth squad. This season with Rasta Vechta, he is a teammate of former UVa forward Jayden Gardner. Grünloh, a 6-foot-11, 19-year-old, has averaged 7.9 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game for Rasta Vechta. He’s shooting 34.2% from 3-point range also. He comes to the United States as one of the best international prospects in this recruiting cycle. Even earlier this year, he appeared on some NBA Draft projections as a potential second-round selection.

Ugonna Onyenso

Previous stop: Kansas State

Projected role: Contributor

The skinny: The 7-foot Onyenso gives UVa an additional rim protector who will likely come off the bench to spell Grünloh. Earlier in Onyenso’s career, he was thought of as a prospect with pro potential and he even declared for the NBA Draft last year before entering the transfer portal after beginning his career at Kentucky. He averaged only 2.8 points and 2.4 rebounds for K-State this past season.

Carter Lang

Previous stop: Virginia

Projected role: Backup

The skinny: Last offseason, the Charlottesville native transferred back to his hometown to play at UVa after starting his career at Vanderbilt. He redshirted last year with the Cavaliers, but does have some playing experience from his lone season with the Commodores.

Thanks for that, but I can’t let this go.

As an English teacher, can I tell you how bothered I am by two grammatical errors and an egregious stylistic error that isn’t quite a grammatical error but still alters the author’s intended meaning in a published article from an established newspaper?

And I’m not counting starting a sentence with a coordinating conjunction like I just did because that can be stylistically effective.

I understand loyalty to your people but not retaining KG is mind blowing. Dude is a master of his craft and all his drills are blowing up on X. It won’t matter when we win it all but losing him and Jwilly hurts big time!

Drills where?

KG was offered a position, just not a full assistant level position. Can’t blame Odom for going with guys he knows and knows how they operate in that particular role over a guy that has never been at that level. Of course I’d want KG on staff, but head over heart here. Maybe one day he or Zay come home after a few years on the bench elsewhere

KG is the one I wished had been retained. That said maybe Kyle felt some loyalty to the coaches and players let go and did not feel right about staying in Charlottesville
