Suggests VT is paying around 7 mil a year for 6 years.
Wonder what the buyout on that is. Maybe I’m being optimistic or pessimistic depending on how you read it, but I feel like if Franklin is in VT in Blacksburg, things have not gone according to his plan.
Virginia Tech hired a dude that sorta kinda failed. None the kids even know who he is. Good for him extracting loot from Tech
We shouldn’t shit on James Franklin. Guy ran a great program for 15 years. Just couldn’t win the big one in the Big 10 which has some schools named Ohio State and Michigan in it.
Here’s a snap-shot of his record:
He’s a problem for us. I’m hopeful, but this is bad for us if he takes it He’s a real coach who ran a big time program and will hit the ground running.
Let’s just beat VT this year and then we can debate. But damn, I hope Bass Tech doesn’t close the deal.
The deal is closed but step back and look at the whole conference. Even if Franklin strikes it hot it doesn’t suddenly mean the conference or Virginia go to hell. Worst case scenario its one loss a year on the field for the hoos. In today’s environment fencing off your state for HS recruits doesn’t hold the same level of importance as it did 25 years ago.
The ACC has survived having far better coaches than Franklin roam the sidelines Dabo has accomplished more than Franklin has ever dreamed of. Franklin to VT has a similar impact as Belichick to UNC. The biggest difference is Franklin can actually coach college ball.
If I remember correctly, Franklin scheduled for success OOC at Vandy.
HS recruiting in general doesn’t. Mouths wanna be fed, players don’t want to wait. 20 4-stars in a class is great until you lose 8-10 of them in the portal.
It’s not good for UVA, there’s no spinning it any other way. We struggle enough with recruiting as it is and he’ll kick our ass in that regard. He’s going to recruit very well, win a lot of games, and lose the big games on the national stage when it really matters, but that’s better than what we’ll be doing.
Best case for us is that he gets an SEC job in 4 years. I’m rather stunned that he didn’t wait to see if he could get a job in a big boy conference rather than the kiddie table.
Franklin is gonna be a pain in the ass in terms of HS recruiting (he already was at Penn State so not much difference there), but if we can’t use this season to propel ourselves into better talent that’s on us. Not because VT hired Franklin. We have the resources now to be competitive and we’ve already shown the ability to hit on high quality players in the portal, there’s no reason why that can’t continue to be the case.
I think we might have the foundation here for 6-wins going forward if we continue to stay out of our own way, but recruiting our region just got MUCH harder and our top rival just raised their floor significantly.
The real issue I see is not that Franklin is going to immediately start pulling the high level kids from our region he was already getting at PSU, although he will also probably do some of that. We’re already losing those kids, that doesn’t affect us much. I’m more worried about the kids he wouldn’t have taken at PSU that he will now that he’s at Tech.
The 5-stars will still go to the big dogs, but now Franklin is going to be competing with our staff for the kids that wouldn’t have been takes at PSU before. That has the potential to really cripple our program because Franklin is a top-5 recruiter in the sport and he will do a good job getting pocketbooks open in Blacksburg and now he’s going to be eying the top-1000 kids in our area instead of just the top-100 ones.
Maybe we can continue to subsist on transfers year in and year out, its definitely a viable path in the modern era. But that means you have to hit on contributors at an extremely high rate year after year after year.
Establishing a reliable high school talent pipeline makes it so that you don’t have to have an insane hit rate every year out of the portal, and just as it felt like we were maybe starting to make some inroads in our natural recruiting territory, we’ve had an apex recruiter dropped down the road.
Is Franklin without a bunch of top end talent a good coach? I lean no. Is Franklin going to have the resources to really kill it on the recruiting trail?
If you ask a VT fan, the answer is they won’t be poorly resourced and are promising him a lot of funds that he will need to hire the staff he wants and for NIL. Enough resources to be in the top tier of ACC schools.
If you ask anyone else, there’s obvious skepticism around this. They are banking on a lot of donations which will come in the short term just due to the buzz from the hire. Beyond this year though, how does a historically “poorly resourced ACC school” like VT sustain this level of spend.
Also, poor Mike Young lol. If you thought they were poorly resourced in hoops before, then they’re about to squeeze every dollar out of other programs to pay for football.
According to mama tonyburnertt who called to gloat (while I was still very much at my office, no less), the checkbooks sound like they’re out in Blacksburg for now. Are they still out if he doesn’t immediately win big? Who knows
He isn’t a good X’s and O’s or in-game coach, but he has proven to be a pretty competent CEO model guy. He’s been very good at coordinator hires imo. The assistant salary pool and his ability to get good staff will make or break him.
In that regard, I’m really glad he took the up front payout from PSU in order to soak up more dollars from their bass fishing budget. I want them paying him as much as possible and not getting a subsidy from PSU.
I will keep saying it, but Franklin being in VA doesn’t change much in my opinion.
We’ve only landed one 4-star under Tony. One. Sure maybe we lose a three-star battle, but I don’t think the stakes are really that high.
Winning this season has hidden the stench of overall recruiting performance. Point being is it’s hard to get much worse; bigger problems than Franklin.
I’d have to look back, but it doesn’t seem we’ve had too many 1x1 recruiting battles with VPI since the London years. I mean, maybe it’s possible that there are UVa kids and there are VPI kids, and there isn’t much overlap.
VT made a great hire. Best available.
So…? They’re not just gonna roll over for us and gift us the state. Never thought they would. It’s up to us to be better.

It begins… a prototypical pocket passer with all the measurables?? Shocker!
Call me whatever you want, but if this thread turns into a “watch who VT is recruiting thread” I will close it.
If I want to follow VPI recruiting I’ll go to their forum.
