❄️ Snowmaggedon Incoming (Allegedly) - Winter Storm Fern❄️

Dedicated to alleged impending snowstorm.

If it hits… this can be the game chat as well.

Is there a legit chance it happens? I’m seeing conflicting reports on it.

Based on comments from several meteorologists… they all feel like there is a high chance this will happen, but with any weather event, modeling only goes so far and they will only feel confident within 12 hours of the event.

The only thing that sucks more than weather forecasts is Carolina.

It’s definitely happening. The only question is whether it’s a whole lot of snow or a little bit less snow and a lot of ice. Pray for the first one.

Weather Channel graphic had Cville in the 18-24 inches this morning. Not great.

I think they’ll move the game to Sunday or Monday if it happens

Sunday is when the majority of this happens. Monday the roads will be mostly un-passable, likely for a few days, especially if we get ice. They should be able to get the game in on Saturday pretty easily unless they are just super conservative.

That’s right let it track north so all y’all jive time turkeys can have it. North Ga aint ready for that keep it out.

What is the precedent for this? When have they moved games for these types of storms in the past?

If the forecast holds, the timing is perfect: late enough to not impact the UNC game, early enough to not mess with travel to South Bend (knock on wood)

The NWS said last night 80-100% chance of at least 5 inches for most of VA last night. You don’t usually see calls that strong this far out, so that should probably be considered the floor.

I think they need to leave right after the UNC game. They aren’t getting out on Monday.

Oh I was thinking the game was on Monday, but it’s Tuesday. Potentially they can get out Tuesday morning but it will be iffy. Supposed to be in the 20s on Monday and zero at night, so no melting.

According to current models the storm is shifting a bit north, though we are projected to get quite a bit of snow and ice that will shut things down for at least a few days, potentially significantly impacting travel, so I don’t know that moving the game to Sunday will help.

I mention the travel because all of NC is projected to get hammered with ice, so this might be a problem for UNC.

That’s the trend, but it’s still too early to really know for sure.

I just saw the morning update of the European model (the gold standard, I guess). I don’t know that people understand how massive this is. Western to central Virginia projected to get 1-2 feet of snow. NC getting all sleet and ice, shutting it down for possibly a week, and likely everyone in its path; power outages throughout the south and mid-Atlantic areas, followed by temperatures in the single digits, so no melting for days.

According to the models this will be the biggest storm in the affected areas for at least a decade, maybe more. I am not exaggerating; this is not a typical snowstorm.

The one thing I am not sure about is exactly what time it will hit Charlottesville.

I don’t think there is going to be a game, but I hope I am wrong.

Snowmageddon was the Feb 2010 snowstorm that dumped over 2 feet in the DC area. Snowzilla was the Jan 2016 snowstorm that dumped almost 3 feet around DC.

Hopefully this isn’t to those levels.

I remember living in Virginia Beach when they forecasted 3-4 inches of snow. Everyone panicked and ran to the grocery store to stock up, as if they were settlers in Jamestown who feared being snowbound for months. There was no calm before that storm.

I was still in DC at that time and don’t recall that at all. I remember being out in Arlington one night and a bunch of snow got dumped in the area. But I don’t recall it being bad. The one that hit around Christmas in 09 before Snowmageddon was worst I thought.

2010 I remember very well. Almost cost me a trip to Vegas.

If anything move it to 12pm tipoff on Saturday.

This was the snowdrift from my back door and the street in my neighborhood in 2016. I looked it up, the official snow accumulation was 17.8 inches.
