Good memory on that December 2009 one. I forgot about it. I think the 1996 one hit Charlottesville pretty hard. I remember snowball fights my second semester living in Balz at the top of the hill.
The DC totals are always about 4-6 inches less than suburbs.
I remember when Atlanta got like half an inch mixed with some ice and people were trapped in their cars on the highway for like 12+ hours.
Yikes…i have a flight in to dulles Friday night leaving Saturday night…
Yeah, the 1996 one was still on the ground when we came back from break in mid January.
This will be the problem.
I was bartending at Michael’s for the 96 one, IIRC. There were only about 7 people there, but they had braved so much to get there, we stayed open anyway. And everyone lived in walking distance.
There was a snowstorm in Colorado Springs when I was stationed there in the Air Force… I think it was 2002. I woke up to go to work and got ready without really thinking about it.
I was ready to leave the house and the snow was halfway up my door. I looked out another window and I couldn’t see the top of my car. I called in and they had instituted bunker-in-place protocols… so I went back to bed.
The weird thing about Colorado Springs was the altitude evaporated the snow so fast… I could drive my car the next day.
Hah thanks Good memory on that and a total space out on the 16 storm. 96 was a massive ice/snow storm that hit Charlottesville we were out of school for like 2 weeks.
They cancelled all 2nd Semester Exams my senior year in '96. We were so mad because that was supposed to be a senior privilege if you had an A or B.
My Brother-in-law had to abandon his car in his parking GT because everyone panicked caused an accident at the entrance. He walked the 2ish miles homes on mostly dry sidewalks.
I was flying back from Vegas to DC day that storm hit. All the flights got crazy jacked up and I couldn’t leave Vegas earlier enough to get out. End up getting routed to Charlotte which got about .6in of ice and everything was shut down. I wound up in an airport hotel watching the Hoos play Wake while all the city was shut down. I barely flew out the following morning we had an hr delay waiting on the crew to get to the airport. When I got back to Alexandria I had to walk the last 2 blocks to my condo cause the streets weren’t clear.
If it says 100% madness on friday I’ll probably cancel
Friday’s going to be a mess if you’re flying. The weather won’t hit Dulles yet, but it’ll be bad at so many other airports that planes and passengers won’t be where they’re scheduled to be if any of their routes that day touch an affected airport.

Obviously we need a new name for this one. Snowpocalypse.
Allegedly… until it happens. ![]()
We should name snowstorms like hurricanes but the only possibilities are Norse gods.
Springs weather was crazy. Our son was born in May 2001 and it was a blizzard on the way to the hospital…could barely see. By 3:00 that afternoon it was close to 60 degrees and the snow was gone.
The weather channel already does this…
It is contentious…
NWS spokesperson Susan Buchanan stated, “The National Weather Service does not name winter storms because a winter storm’s impact can vary from one location to another, and storms can weaken and redevelop, making it difficult to define where one ends and another begins.”[34] The National Weather Service has stated that “no plans to consider naming winter storms” are in progress.[
Actually looks like they have already name this one - Fern
