State of the Trail Report

Are we still looking at the same decision timeframe for these two?

Who knows with everything going on. There’s no schedule for anything right now. Keels definitely wants to take more visits. He’s been careful about saving officials so he can use them this Spring. That’s telling in that if he thought he would wait until Fall, there wouldn’t be a need to do that. They get 5 more after August.

It’ll be interesting if UVA tries to re-engage with Carter Whitt now that he’s staying in '21. Bennett really really likes him. But I still don’t know that it work here. Right now they’re feeling pretty good about their chances with Keels and there’s just not room for two guards that expect to play right away. 2nd guard in the class is totally optional. Needs to be someone willing to accept the situation, and worth passing on a similar player in 2022.

Really like Whitt. Not as big as Keels but might be better long range bomber and quicker with the ball.

YES - Bennett wins with 3 stars. Championship with 4 and 3 stars. Bennett will win more with 5 stars. And his players all leave Virginia with better basketball skills. Real skills improved. Not a mere year being babysat because required by the NBA.

Bennett can win with four stars but we won our national championship off the backs of high four stars. And one of them was so good that he was a lottery pick. If you’re gonna win a NCAA title you’re gonna need to have one most times and you find those at the top of the recruiting rankings

Yeah, but don’t forget: that lottery pick you’re talking about was ranked #91 in the class of 2016 by 247. Guy, Jerome and Huff were all ranked higher.

I believe Whitt was very high on UVA at one time. Back then I believe it was between us and NC State. After both teams signed top point guards he was back to the drawing board. Just my gut feeling but I really believe that

Brief Efton Reid update

I think Coronavirus may have really helped us out with Reid and Keels

What makes you think that? (not saying I disagree)

Because we’re in deeper than anyone with Reid and as deep (with Nova) for Keels. With no campus or in person visits anytime soon it puts us at an advantage for guys that are looking to decide in the Spring/early Summer

Covid-19 is changing everything. Most important is everyone’s health and well being. With that said, foremost, my best wishes for everyone’s health.

As to the impact that Covid-19 has on recruiting, which is minor as compared to the virus’ impact on the health of the world’s population and economies, I would guess that it works to UVA’s advantage. Certainly no one cares more about the health and well being of his players than Coach Bennett. He just donated a large amount to creation of a center to support the careers of his players outside of basketball. He understands the big picture and that there are more important things than basketball. Any player coming to UVA will be under the most caring coach during their short formulative years at UVA. They will be at a great academic school that, even if they can’t play basketball for a period while at UVA, they can further their academic studies. And for Reid and Keels, they will be at the best place with the additional advantage of being close to home and family in this tough period.

This may also be a good time for Efton to reconsider reclassifying to 2020. If he can’t play basketball, might as well spend the time being fully engaged in studying at college. Put his time maximum use.

Section in here on '21 guard Lucas Taylor. Notice Liberty and Charlotte involved too. It’s like the old gang found one that fits and was waiting on AAU to figure out which level he should be playing at.

“Virginia was top notch. It was a huge game against Louisville and they were able to pull out the win. I got to meet the coaches and they were all great and excited to see me again during summer ball.

Seeing as there’s maybe some interest in Trey Wertz, do you expect there to any reaching out to JaDun Michael?

Was just about to post that. Could definitely see UVA reaching out to Michael. They had been checking him out for a while when he decided to reclass up for Wichita. Could be a nice draft and stash option.

What the heck is going on with Wichita anyway? They’re taking a beating with defections.

But they’re also adding a bunch of people too? It’s very bizarre

I can’t help but think that Falwell isn’t doing Coach McKay any favors due to his [Falwell’s] attitudes concerning the covid-19 crisis. This will be especially true if Lynchburg turns into a hot spot. Recruiting there cannot be the easiest thing in the world, and I imagine Falwell just made it tougher.

This went over my head at the time. Loyola Marymount hired Marquette assistant Stan Johnson. He was at Arizona State before that and had opened up a little bit of a pipeline, notably Markus Howard. DaRon’s only other official visit so far was to Marquette. Long way of explaining you can probably eliminate them now.
