3MW did their coaching grades a couple days ago (Odom got an A from Jim, A/B from Matt, and B from Ky; there was a curve…), and someone mentioned Odom has beaten his preseason KenPom ranking 5 out 5 years. Nice.
We’ve talked about it in other threads, but Nick Kalinowski built a really cool tool for ranking international recruits:
Being able to have the metric be very legible (i.e. you know why Grünloh got scored as a 5.5) is neat.
Oh no… we need a term for this. It’s a google war or something
John Moreland is pretty good…
Dammit, the link isn’t working properly.
Anyway, she posted on IG a week ago: “I’m actually not a basketball analyst.”
New tool to play around with: http://kalidrafts.com/
There’s some stats-y discussion going on here, but my takeaway is that Iowa hired a basketball coach who’s figured out how to get punting into the game.

For the analytics sickos, Hoops Vision and Kenpom have produced an analytics course for coaches.
I hope he keeps a toe in the fan content world, too
At $250 per enrollee, I’m not sure there is a large enough market to retire from his day job.
We’ve seen how slap dash the AAU event distribution is let alone their stat capturing. Maybe a handful of top high schools do better and then there are the coaches who may want to think analytically even though their data capture is poor. Those could be potential markets.
After that though, who would credibly buy? My only other guesses are gamblers and other stat wonks/fanboys.
Okay, ignore everything else I said before. KP is probably picking out his island as we speak.
I assume the target audience is probably non P5 staffs? Maybe D-2/3?
Basically programs that can’t afford an analyst or something better. I agree that’s the target.
I enjoyed this:
Also serves as a reminder that Ty is insanely good at floaters.
Some charts here on NBA draftees by college class year:

The short version is that sophomores don’t really get drafted anymore, but seniors are starting to get drafted again.
This makes some sense but I don’t know why there was the rise in drafting sophomores over the last decade that you see on the chart.
I could see it turning into basically a sales event for a premium data product for teams at all levels though.
On preseason ratings and when they wash out from rating systems:
- KenPom - influence remains until game 27 for each team, decreasing after each game: https://kenpom.com/contact.php
- Torvik - until game 15 or 16: Adam's WI Sports Blog: T-Rank FAQ
- EvanMiya - unclear
- Bill Connelly SP+ - early October: https://twitter.com/espn_billc/status/1975994458568003747?s=46&t=wAzMZR-0PRGT1LpN6U5x0g
I remember hearing Ken say that he’d be inclined to leave it in all year! But if he did that, I suspect they’d take him off the team sheets.
Right on both counts, I believe. I think specifically he said the model predicts better if you leave preseason in all year.
