šŸˆ TaxSlayer Gator Bowl: Virginia vs Missouri, Saturday, 27 December 2025, 1930, ABC

Why did Bama lose to a wretched FSU team? Stuff happens even to elite teams. Which UVA isn’t, so its crazy to think it wouldn’t happen to merely very good teams as well.

Lotta interesting thoughts here and above, but I’m gonna let the Dude make the counter argument.

Well, we made it to #1 in 90 and crapped the bed that season too (And the team that beat us went on to split the national title, so can’t say we didn’t have a real chance to win it all).

The fact is most of our better teams also lost games they shouldn’t have or crapped the bed in bowl games. Enough so, that a sizable chunk of our fan base was ready to run off our Hall of Fame coach.

And since then, we’ve had a lot of teams that couldn’t take advantage of crap schedules or shitty tech teams.

I’m not even sure what point I’m making exactly. Maybe it’s just that there are no flawless UVA football seasons. Even my favorite seasons from the last 40 years have some bitter what ifs. So this season will fit in nicely.

Looking back at those seasons, the ā€˜95 team was inarguably great and they played multiple legit top-10 or 15 teams, plus had the iconic win over FSU. They didn’t have a better season than this one perhaps, but that was a hell of team and a tremendous season.

On the other hand, ā€˜98 was still great, but… honestly it fades just slightly if you dig in. They started by beating an Auburn team ranked 25th to start the season, but in classic SEC overhyping fashion went on to go 3-8. In fact, not one of our first 5 opponents that season even went .500 (Duke’s 4-7 was the best). We were 5-0, ranked 7th in the country, yet had beaten no one any good.

We then lost to a very good GT (ranked 25th at the time, finished the season 9th), but beat NC State (who was fine, 7-5) and Wake (who were bad). At this point we were 7-1, ranked 12th, yet had one win over a decent team.

The season ended tougher, we were mauled by FSU, beat a decent UNC (7-5) team, narrowly beat a good VT team (finished the season ranked 23rd), and narrowly lost to a good Georgia team in the Peach Bowl. That was a very good season, one of the best in school history. They finished the season ranked 18th which feels about right.

But they certainly weren’t better than this year’s team. The ā€˜98 team beat 2 ranked teams in 5 tries, and one of those wins was over a team that turned out to be substantially worse than this year’s FSU. And 6 of their 9 wins came against teams that finished 4-7 or worse. This year’s team had 3 wins against teams under .500, FSU, Stanford, and UNC. If Coastal Carolina wins its bowl game tomorrow, this year’s team will have 8 wins over teams that didn’t merely go .500, but had actual winning records. I don’t know if that’s actually remarkable, but it feels remarkable.

I’d give the nod to ā€˜95, but this year’s team had a better season and was better than ā€˜98 imo.

The @Michigan loss in 1995 was the most UVA football thing ever.

lol just giving you some grief with a drive by poop. I don’t have the energy for a rebuttal (my youngest was up at 4:45)

Told yall wrong about Eli wood being on scholarship!! Ahmad Hawkins confirmed he wasn’t. I hope coach TE is giving him the love he deserves now!

The most UVA thing ever is to engage in heated debate about how we should feel about a season where we beat Tech, won a major bowl, won the most games ever in program history and were ranked in the top 25 for the majority of the season. I’m going to just be happy about it and see how basketball, lacrosse and baseball go.

Go Hoos!

Best season of all time, probably not the best team relative to the rest of nation

Best season of all time that still contains one of the most heartbreaking losses of my lifetime. To DUKE. But at least we were in a position to come up short in a big spot against an inferior opponent rooted for by evil people.

Good platform to build on! Hope we can continue. Makes next year super important and pressure packed again. I like who we’ve been linked to in the portal so far though.

I am thawing my chill on Elliott, definitely surpassed my expectations this year. I’m a little worried we ran up against our absolute ceiling as a program this year.

He’s scholarship worthy and I’m sure he’ll get one if he’s coming back but his family is heavily tied into UVA so I’m guessing they aren’t too concerned either way

Yes, imagine sports fans engaging in a debate about best all time teams or players. What a crazy world we live in.

In a world where Texas Tech and fricking INDIANA are top 4 seeds in the cfp, we did not hit our ceiling as a program.

Now it’s certainly a debate if we hit our ceiling under this staff.

It was a great season though. My hurdle for a ā€œgood seasonā€ given the schedule and year 4 under the coach was 8 wins before the season. He surpassed good by all objective measures, deserves all the kudos, more time, and continued support. Next year will be important to prove this wasn’t his 1 year peak that prior coaches also had (even if those coaches had fewer wins but harder schedules and less financial support than Tony had this year).

Augusta Free Press went hard. I didn’t see this coming. Click

Having stopped reading him a while back since it’s mostly click bait incendiary hot takes, I will credit him with using whatever position he can find to punch down. Didn’t he spend significant periods of time attacking TB after every loss or close win? I’m guessing he’s been calling for Elliot’s ouster for a while (remember headlines but don’t click), have to find a new angle to sh!t on Virginia after 11 wins, so why not attack the fans (don’t disagree with the premise that Taylor didn’t need to play, just doubt the intentions behind the attack were good).

He always goes hard, because that’s how he gets what he wants - clicks

Cant tell his point? Just call out people who emailed him or the kid for not playing?

Confusing skim of a read for me

Yeah that shit bothers me that he does that. Someone disagrees and makes a comment on Facebook on the AFP post? He won’t hesitate to use your first and last name in his next article on the topic. It’s basically light / borderline doxxing people, not cool.

If it’s Augusta ā€œFree Pressā€ then it should be free speech for the audience it’s shared to too, right?

Same - I wasn’t sure if I agreed with him or not. But I guess those above, saying he’s just looking for clicks are probably accurate. That was probably the main point.

Guess I shouldn’t have cross-posted. I was just so caught off guard by it.
