🏀 TBT: Embrace the Pace

Mamadi and Kihei were the two biggies. Heard Akil mentioned but I don’t think that was ever an expectation. There’s obviously other guys playing around the world that might’ve been interested, but it’s a tough ask for those that are still playing or would just have ended seasons to come back and commit to a tournament like this.

This is the type of thing that needs full buy in from players and the university and also helps to have continuity from year to year. Take emotion out of it, UVA had none of that so just a bad idea.

True and not to say they won’t come around eventually.

20 yrs ago zero chance you’ expected to be as close to the program as you have the last 5 yrs

Idk if it was iffy to begin with, Charlottesville had the most ticket signups of any host site.

Nailed it and I never thought about that. I was too busy procreating and getting divorced!

A big draw of tbt at jpj is to come back to cville and see “everyone”. Without any familiarity, it makes it easy to say no, i’m busy. If they were tight with some of the new staff, it would be an easy excuse to come back and hang.

During the season (now), people may feel like they need a break…looking forward to seeing family, being home…now u ask them to come to cville to play in tbt…it sounds like work.

No need to explain it to me. I totally get it and agree.

You nailed exactly why I was excited about being in town for it when the prospect came up.

I was personally never convinced there would be enough confirmed players. This stuff is hard to organize.

Yeah, it would have been a minor miracle if it came together under any scenario

That said, I do think Odom needs to put some attention on Bennett-era relationships.

Million dollars for the first one to come back and pretend to like UVa and not just Tony Bennett

Kyle was our best hope. We even got him to wear kackis. :joy:

How do other schools do it every year?!

Not doubting it but just wondering if Virginia is an anomaly for whatever reason

The continuity is big I think. Getting over the hump of starting a team. Once you do that, I think it acts as a proof of concept and is easier to fill in a roster. Hosting too is just extra work and money so it’s difficult to get the department and arena to be super excited about it especially if it might not make any money.

So no, not UVA-specific other than the Hoos have never had a team before.

Would love for Tony to step up and lead this. No conflict with the transistion to Odom and would guarantee a strong roster of his former players. Come on Tony!!

“Uncertainty” about the UVA alumni team? I thought there was certainty that it’s already not happning. Close enough anyway that TBT would want to treat it as such and sign up a replacement asap if they haven’t already.
