I’ll buy his stock for sure. I think he is going to be very good for us long term.
Dang. You got more than you asked for.
Definitely. Nobody is critiquing him this hard yet, but I remember a time after playing WVU that people were down in Ty.
Ty is a goat, so I’m not trying to make the comparison, but how I feel about Rhode early on is similar. You can see he’s trying to get comfortable out there, adjust. Once he does I think we will be quite happy.
Some thoughts after watching on replay:
-
their handsiness and physicality on D bothered our ball handlers. Refs could’ve called a bunch more hand checks.
-
Is Reece ok? He’s looked bad since Florida. Not hobbled. But bad. Someone on here said they saw him injured at the Florida game. Haven’t heard anything else.
-
Nice defense. Real nice.
-
Defensive rebounding. Going to kill us man.

Glad this game helped us regress to mean shooting 3s and not some tougher ones
A little of the first and a lot of the second. They’ve known since the summer that he wasn’t going to be quite as good as hoped. I told you guys that back then, in my delicate way haha He’s just not explosive enough for parts of his game to translate…doesn’t block shots and isn’t a high level finisher.
He’s still a physical guy who plays hard though. He’s gotten 6 offensive boards in 31 minutes this year. Garbage time or not, that’s impressive.
I don’t get making a big fuss about it. He could be useful when called on. And the main reason he isn’t playing is because all the other frontcourt players have exceeded expectations. Buchanan, Groves, Bond. And none of them are going to get time at Dunn’s expense.
Agree on all. We played a terrible team and beat them by a considerable margin but it didn’t take a really good team to do that. TSU plays hard, I’ll give them that, but they have no offense at all.
We’re really soft with the ball and on the boards. We had it taken away from us too many times. Could use some Yuri Barnes toughness in the paint.
Reece just looked like he was in pain all game. Every time you see him he walks like he’s in pain.
We looked like we had no idea what we were trying to do on offense for about 65% of the game. We seemed to gain some vague notion of offense about a quarter of the way through the second half.
Buchanan continued to look very promising. I continue to like what we saw out of Bond. If Dunn had more offense he’d be an All-American.
I have been waiting for the Rohde I kept reading about all late summer and fall. Haven’t seen him yet. Maybe it’s just him feeling his way and it will click for him later in the season. Don’t get me wrong, his play has been OK and he made a few plays, but nothing like the preseason talk.
After three games, I really doubt Minor is going to be of any use. He has some decent plays and then he looks like he is just a spectator on some plays.
Need to shore up a few things for next week. Need to take care of the ball and really make blocking out and rebounding a focus.
Pretty sure that’s just how Reece walks.
Old man walk
Too bad there wasn’t an LRA back in 1994, because I remember my uncles saying that Yuri Barnes could use some Tom Sheehey toughness in the paint!
That’s the biggest thing for me on Minor. I picked up what you were laying down during the summer and luckily Groves and Blake have exceeded what I thought especially at that point. But I think when the time is right Minor will be able to slot in and fill an important role. Not unlike the random 10 or 12 point game from Papi we got periodically
Sorry if covered but was the Dunn dunk correctly called a block or a charge? The rule changed?
Defense looked great, our offense just doesn’t flow without Imac in there.
I never thought I would see a player grimace as often as Reece. Insert Dante. Those two must be in a two man battle for most grimaces per minute played in the country. Everyone else is fighting it out for a distant 3rd place
@HoozGotNext My apologies if i’ve missed it, but have we heard anything about Imac’s timeline?
A travesty nobody told Dunn he had dried up spit on the side of him lip through the whole post game interview.
Im sure Sampson could get up higher because of his height alone. But outside of Ralph when have we ever had a center that can sky like BB. Dude can jump out of the gym. Some of his blocks are like volleyball spikes. Imagine this dude after 4 yrs with Mike Curtis.
Reese, Dunn, Harris, and BB
It marked the first time in program history that Virginia had 10 or more steals (13) and blocks (10) in the same game.
We need Reece to get to that next level scorer soon. He’s been super disappointing in the half court offense. His numbers aren’t good as they are but I’m sure they’re really bad without his pick 6 numbers in there.
If we’re going to get close to our ceiling he has to be much better on that end
Yeah the ceiling of this team is going to move heavily based on how well Reece (and Rohde) can make the half court offense. Need Rohde to work harder to get open from 3 so that Reece can slash and exploit the room. Hopefully IMac is back soon and we can tune that up before conference play begins in earnest
