The Elliott Era begins

Apparently Nelson’s said he’s done playing, so we’ll need at least 1 transfer, probably 2. Probably 3 if Swoboda doesn’t come back.

Agree on Liberty. Still disagree for BYU.

I guess dream OOC game would be something like Texas A&M/Tennessee, Wisconsin / Iowa, or UCLA?

To me those are games are within the realm of possibility of a win. Also teams known to lay eggs despite the media love. Kind of like Notre Dame.

Based on that “Alliance” thing, I’d expect to see more B1G/PAC opponents and fewer SEC/XII opponents, but who knows.

I’m glad Liberty’s off the schedule. We don’t need to help them get any more exposure and it’s a low upside game against a possibly tough G5 opponent. We don’t get credit for a win, but we take heat for a loss.

BYU as a P5 opponent would make sense other than we have no reason to play in Utah. We don’t have a big alumni base there, we don’t draw students from there and we don’t recruit there (not anymore). Unless there’s some large doner living out there, I don’t see the value of that series.

Cal would be a good series. We have Bay Area alums and applicants. I’m sure some of those alums are donors, maybe could be larger donors. The engineers and CS folks might love to have face time with our engineer coach and could lead to more donations. I’m sure Cal has quite a few alums in the DC area too. We’re relatively even programs. Hell, we probably recruit the same type of athlete and the same types of high schoolers might apply to both schools. UCLA/USC/Stanford would work too, but we probably have most in common with Cal.

I don’t have a problem with the occasional series with JMU, ODU or W&M, but I’d stay away from Liberty for reasons that have little to do with football.

Must’ve missed when Perkins suited up for the Hokies or Heels. You have any links to those highlights?

This is an unproductive argument. There isn’t an objective reaction to a player transferring. Totally understandable for some of us, and a breach of faith for others. Fine, let’s share the news, vent or not vent, and find our replacements.

Serious question - is there a recruiting element to away games? I never thought there would be but realizing that could be naive. We’re not the type of school that attracts non-athletes to our school based on our football program so don’t feel like that should direct our out-of-state scheduling.

And I think we need to worry about our home attendance before thinking about away game attendance…

Perhaps tangential to your point, but I sort of disagree. If you look at some of UVa’s peer institutions academically, I think the presence of a power 5 football program AND national caliber hoops team is a solid differentiator. E.g., compare to some of the lesser Ivies: a tier lower academically, but cheaper (much cheaper in-state), marginally warmer, probably more fun (depending on your type of fun), and legit high major sports.

Totally makes sense. I’m down on BYU because I don’t think it’s an interesting matchup. Doesn’t mean a ton if you beat them. Their stadium is gorgeous but not a destination they don’t have a rabbid fanbase that travels and fills Scott. And we’ve done a series with them. I’m over it.

The other schools you listed I’d take in a heartbeat. A&M WIS Iowa regularly flirt with the top 10. I’d love an excuse to go to College Station. Rocky Top is a great place for a game and I’ve been on the sidelines at Camp Randall great college town.

I look at it as what helps the program? And will it be fun for me as a fan. Check both those boxes and I’m in.

It can help expose the program to a new base of football and student recruits. Assuming it’s a good showing.

Madison was awesome. Was there for the Womack injury game. I went to a Georgia-Auburn game around the same time, and while the Auburn stadium experience was more impressive, Auburn in general didn’t seem like a place I’d like to spend a ton of time. Of course, it was late Aug / early Sept, in Madison, which helped. I wouldn’t want to be there November-March.

It’s a good town overall. My college GF went there so i went up multiple times. They do football right. The stadium is surprisingly cozy esp for a B1G.

I wasn’t thinking road attendance so much. More that the AD could hold events surrounding the game that could attract some alums who don’t plan on going to the game itself. Admissions could set up local meet and greets for high schoolers and their parents.

I don’t actually know anything. I’m talking out of my ass again. The stuff I listed off was just anything I could think of as reasons not to play a road game somewhere. Some of them might not be real reasons.
