Agree with the first part, disagree with the second. I’d rephrase it with a BECAUSE instead of REGARDLESS. We root for UVa because of our connection to UVa, and because of our perception that those wearing the jersey have that similar connection.

EDIT - take two hypothetical states of the world: (1) more or less the same as the current, but football and basketball players get paid $100k each; (2) current payment rules (including NIL), but football and basketball players come to UVa for their preseason and season, and then do something else the rest of the year with no other integration into academic or student life. Which state of the world has a more deleterious effect on college sports fandom?

Yeah, based on last year’s 2 deep it’d be Taylor at LT, Nelson at LG, Furnish at C, Josey at RG and Swoboda or Leech at RT. Figure if Swoboda comes back, we’d get Leech in there over Josey or Taylor. For depth there’s Jestus Johnson and Charlie Patterson among the young guys. Older guys who haven’t seen the field like Teter, Devine (is he still here?) and Al Soufi (if he returns) could figure in there too.
If the young guys are as good as advertised, That’s a good enough line if Nelson and Swoboda come back. Maybe you get a 1-2 year guy at C. Depth is a problem though and that’s hard to build through transfers unless you’re recruiting over your own young guys and then you risk losing them to outbound transfer.
BYU isn’t a bad match-up they are a typically good team. But they aren’t seen as a strong brand. I see it as slightly better than when UVa played the series with Boise. Going out to Provo doesn’t open new recruiting pipelines.
Liberty is a lose lose in my book. Beat them and whoopie. Lose and it’s a disaster.
Well the oversimplified version of the argument is that loyalty is a neutral trait that is only as good as the organization, person, or cause you are loyal too. Loyalty to a bad person or group or idea would be a negative but loyalty to a good one would be a positive. So it’s not a stand alone good trait like generosity or honesty. And, of course, the reason it is a debate is that the other side argues loyalty is a stand alone good trait.
Ok, I can understand that but my loyalties are to my family, my friends, my community and the Hoos. I have others too but it’s nothing bad but I can see your point like if you was loyal to the KKK or the communist party those weren’t be a good thing. I don’t have the connection to the Hoos that most of you guys do but I’m sure I’m about as loyal to them as it gets.
Agree with you it’s positive in most of our lives as long as we choose our friends well. As you hinted at one or the reasons it’s an area of study is because of the cults of personality that surrounded many of the 20th century atrocities. Anyway an interesting rabbit hole to go down for you or anyone else who enjoys reading about ethics.
Go to UNC or VT and you are no longer UVA. We curb stomped Ronald Curry and he never spent a day on grounds. That was back in the day when a rivalry meant something.
