Baylor fans were saying he tore his ACL and is gonna miss a good chunk of next season.

Nice pickup. Should keep them right in the Enfield zone (aka: 45-55 in KenPom unless he has both Mobley bros)

Damn I would still take him and redshirt him in that 14th/15th spot.

I feel like we’re getting to like 4 guys in the 14/15 spot. Carrere, Barksdale, does Lang count?

In reality, anyone after the #11 spot isn’t going to play much anyway.

Another Euro kid who got some pro playing time

Of all the things to worry about, I’m not sure thinking the staff might just forget how much money they have and run out before signing a full rotation is one of them. Now, whether they can actually recruit anybody tall may be a different story.

Haha, can’t argue with the second point. But I think we can still stress about the first.

It’s not like the NIL era hasn’t brought us a number of high profile stories or disgruntled student athletes that did not get paid. Just curious about the math of a ~7 mil dollar budget (report before the season) and the 6.2 mil estimate of what has been promised (noted yesterday). I am not saying we don’t have the money, maybe the NIL fund raisers went nuts and we do have 10 mil, but that would be new info.

First, I don’t think you should put too much emphasis on the precision of the estimate of $6.2. I think HGN has posted a range of what he thinks it is so far. You can search for that. I don’t have time right now (just enough time to waste on a lengthy response when what I say on this board is a significant detraction to 2Q US GDP growth…sorry about the recession guys). Not sure how precise that is either, but I’d tend to go with a guy who is probably talking to folks around the program and not a guy using some formula.

Second, $7 was the floor of the range.

Third, HGN has alluded to more being available (I think).

But my point is more that you seem to be worried that the staff went out and blew their wad on 4-5 guys and totally forgot they need multiple front court pieces. Basically you’re worried that the staff is dumb. I don’t think that’s a reasonable concern. Grif Aldrich is not a dumb guy.

My concern about the money was always that they wouldn’t actually use it as a competitive tool. They’ve shown that they will, so I’m highly encouraged by that. Doesn’t mean they didn’t waste the money on shitty players, but not ā€œoverpaying,ā€ as so many insist on labeling the strategy, would have gotten us nowhere IMO.

Now my concern is that the staff has lost momentum and might struggle to land quality front court pieces. I don’t think it will be because they ran out of money. They’re getting guys in for visits. HGN has said you don’t get a visit unless the NIL is right first. So there is budget remaining. Perhaps not enough to win a straight auction, so the concern is really that Odom isn’t selling his vision effectively.

My concern on the money is that the task of pulling in a power 5 roster is costing more than anyone expected. Pulling in these pieces may have cost a big part of the reported budget, and the staff is banking on fund raising, which may or may not come through. It’s the market and it’s a gamble. I’m not questioning any one’s intelligence, this is not a black/white: smart/dumb matter. I’m just anxious about whether the apparent gamble will pay off.

6-8 Taine with maybe more handles?

It’ll come through. For one year only, this is truly not a concern imo. If the price tag for a competitive team is run up in unforeseen ways, the money will be there. Everyone knows we have to get this right, and a mill or two isn’t going to stop us.

I wish we had a similar environment for football, but alas. Basketball mafia and Carla fundraising prowess will have us for this though.

I think the budget always was banking on fundraising. Charitable giving/non-profit dynamics apply here…the budget is conditional on what you can do with it and and how well you can sell that to your funders.

I mean there are 2000 players to go through. It can take some time. Plus I’m sure some more will enter. the guard lineup is looking really good and Tillis is going to be a weapon. He’s probably a better BVP/Gardner. We still need some pieces. Trust the staff to find those pieces. If Odom is worth his salt, he’ll make it work.

We are one starting level center and a Malik Thomas waiver away from a very competitive year one team imo. Need to fill out another forward, and a backup 5, but I really do think we’re ahead of schedule. It’s just now tax day! This was the day to worry if we didn’t have any guys.

You’re right. I’ll keep calm.

UVA should sue on the Thomas waiver if the medical redshirt is being held up by the NCAA. No way they wouldn’t fold on that. If it is being held up by USF I guess you play it differently.

The lack of true bigs bothers me. I’d rather not have a project starting at the 5 spot. That said maybe the Euro pipeline helps there.

Carter Lang will destroy the ACC

It’s not USF - it’s USC that could be the issue -
Or it could just be the NCAA has a ton of these they are processing

meaning USC is getting involved with Thomas?
