Yeah ppl really took that Canadian player of the year thing seriously. I remember on 247 guys we pulling Shai Alexander out of their ass bc he was Canadian and not Canadian player of the year lol.
True. Lol. But it was a fact that he received an award for such an accomplishment . As to separate issue of whether it correlates to his value as a uSA college player. Probably not much.
I get the retention piece but don’t think they’ve done much crazy in the portal. Cluff is good. Murphy is way worse than the guards we got. Don’t think much of the Israeli guy either. If that’s a $10M roster then they sure as hell didn’t get any sort of a hometown discount on the guys that stayed.
Don’t underestimate the retention piece. Smith and TKR were each top 10 players in the country statistically this year and thus 2 of the top returners nationally.
And cluff and Mayer are 2 of the top gets this portal season (both likely higher ranked than Thomas). Mayer is a “high school” recruit that they beat Duke and Auburn out for.
They really should be the National title favorites next year.
This is the formula - build your stars through high school recruiting, pay to retain them, and use your extra $$$ to sign the best complimentary pieces you can from the portal.
Feel like it should be @Hooandtrue who posts this, but Etan Thomas’s kid, Malcolm, went to Dematha, redshirted at Villanova, in the portal. 6-8, shotblocker. Not much offense? Probably a year or two away from impact… https://x.com/GoodmanHoops/status/1912670890426314923
Could be. Hard to know when he’s been redshirting all year. Does he want to leave, test the market, or did Willard watch him workout and was meh? Tbh, I have no idea (what else is new)
Yeah I just think those type of guys have way more value at Purdue than elsewhere. TKR? Sure he could get a big bag anywhere. And sure there would be demand for Smith. But I’m not convinced Purdue needed to spend >$2M to keep him (Loyer too). And for that to be a $10M roster, all of those guys would be getting > $2M, which I’m skeptical of. Purdue is kinda like old Bennett UVa in that there are certain types of kids who value playing in that system, and for that reason might be okay not looking for the highest bidder.
Agreed that they are a natty favorite but that’s beside my point.
Braden Smith was Big Ten player of the year / consensus first team all-american! And we paid our guards (who are good, but not in that zip code) 1mn+. So yeah, I suspect the open market value is significantly north of 2mn.
The rumor was smith was on $1.6m last year (which would have made him one of the highest paid players in the sport) after Gonzaga tried to pry him from Purdue. Im sure he’s well north of $2m now.
