Non zero chance a sports fan gets sent to El Salvador over having a psychotic breakdown when their starting center from South Sudan gets deported before conference play.
This is random but what the hell is Gonzaga doing? They lose a bunch of guys (yes Ike is returning and great) but Warley is their lone portal commit.
Didnt even know this guy was still in college to begin with. Unc Legend. Him quitting on the team saved hubert davis
Their fans are also freaking out. They thought they had malik thomas prebaked lol
Isnât Thomas seeking a medical redshirt? Do you think Enfield was refusing to let guys sit who were hurt and shouldnât have played?
I mean, maybe. If so, he should get that waiver. And Enfield maybe shouldnât be involved in coaching athletics at any level if they do grant that waiver under those circumstancesâŚ
He didnât get hurt till the end of Feb.
Which, since thatâs after the medical RS deadline, still leaves us searching for a compelling reason to grant the waiver
He looks like an asshole. I want him.
I mean, I also want Thomas to get a waiver! Which is why I want to hear a compelling reason to grant oneâŚ
I think they might actually be kinda broke. Clean up on the bargain aisle at the end is a viable strategy to be honest. Lights come on and they look pretty attractive if youâve already missed out on a big bag.
His grandma was sick so he left the team. He has been nothing but great for the team and the community for 3 years in Minnesota, so great that I really question the locker room cancer at UNC story. I donât know that Iâd continue to pile on the guy.
Unc 247 at the time had him right under Coach K on their hate list.
I donât know the details of his waiver. Was simply making the point that denying waivers for 5th year guys who effectively didnât play in 2021-2022 is silly because they very well may have redshirted if it was a normal season without guys constantly missing games with COVID. It was basically a similar story to the reasons why the NCAA counted 2020-2021 as a âfreeâ year for everyone. Easy to forget many years later but that winter was about as bad as ever given the Omicron variant. The WCC had a weekend where literally every menâs and womenâs basketball game was canceled.
I think the compelling case is:
- he only played a total of 18 minutes all season. He didnât play more than 3 minutes in a single game, all minutes were in irrelevant garbage time.
- that season was not a ânormalâ season and given that, it may have contributed to why he was not redshirted
- he didnât get a free covid year in 2021. Not directly relevant but point #2 is a lot weaker for guys that already got the benefit of a free year, which Malik did not. He has only really played 3 representative seasons of college basketball.
Ultimately I can see them still denying because rules are rules and they donât want to open Pandoraâs box with other waivers out there. That said, my gut reaction is Malik probably would have a good case in court.
This is the argument that seems to have primary weight with the fans, because we all have enough common sense to say that itâs ridiculous that a few minutes of garbage time costs a year of eligibility.
But I think itâll have zero weight with the NCAA, because ridiculous or not, that is the rule. Their policy at the time was clear (for that matter itâs still the policy now), the player knew that policy, and the player played anyway, knowing it would cost him a year of eligibility.
To say âOkay it was just 18 minutes, you get a passâ, without simultaneously setting a new rule (â<X minutes is allowedâ) is just opening a can of worms⌠and this comes at a time when the NCAA has several other open cans of worms to deal with. So my guess is, theyâll dismiss the 18-minute argument out of hand. They donât even want to go there.
Of course they donât want to go there. The question is, would they rather go to court instead?
Whatever happened to the talk of changing the redshirt rule to something similar to football? I thought that was going to be part of the revenue sharing package. Or maybe unrelated but back during the season, it sounded like that was comingâŚnow no mention, so guess not.
AnywayâŚI would be okay if they changed it to the football rule, then granted waivers to anyone that would have qualified in past years. Generally Iâm in favor of sticking to the rules thoughâŚgive an inch on these type issues, better expect to give it all.
I think the redshirt rule proposal goes with the 5-in-5 proposal that they arenât gonna consider until the House settlement is done.
The answer is⌠yes. Why wouldnât they?
Iâm sincerely curious why people feel confident that Thomas has a strong court case. I donât even see anything for him to base a complaint on.
Baba to FAU last offseason still kinda befuddles me, but I guess it was a good spot for him to play a ton. He did well there so maybe itâs got him better options now?

Feels like someone we should pursue, no?
