There’s a very strong argument that it’s better to play a lot at a lower level than ā€œdevelopā€ off the bench at a high major if you’re not an instant-impact recruit/transfer. It’s why I don’t blame Brandon Jennings in the slightest; go be a starter in the A-10. (A) it’s a hell of a lot more fun to start and play 25 minutes a night than it is to scrap for 10 minutes a game off the bench. (B) it opens up a lot more in the way of transfer opportunities the following year.

And there’s the downside risk. If you play like crap, you’ve lost your role (recruited over in some way), and your potential portal value drops.

He wasn’t ready for UVa regardless, but staying at VCU could hurt him, depending on his own development and what Martelli wants from him.

For sure. This is the new formula. Hard to show highlights when you dont play much in real games

A lot of action at the end of the portal window. I wonder whether the NIL amounts go up at the end of the portal window or down for same quality of players that available. Are Teams more desperate and willing to spend more? Are teams out of money. So much going on.

I bet Coach Odom is good at his approach. He has gone through this rodeo a lot in his moving up to better jobs.

I love the inclusion of family in the statement. It puts a new spin on the curse of moms loving us. ā€œMom loves us AND middle school brother doesn’t feel like the compensation level reflects true open market value. We are so fucked.ā€

Wong would likely make north of 2 million easily now - maybe 3.

Duke is full court pushing for euro Dame Sarr.

Why not UVA also push for Dame Sarr? He’s literally teammates with Justin Anderson and I see he follows Mike Tobey too

Absolutely every player and recent graduate must be feeling this sentiment. The slope of compensation is so steep that, no matter when you entered, entering the system a mere 1 year later would have made a monstrous financial difference.

And then you look back into the way distant past at a guy like Kyle Guy. He didn’t even stay for his 4th year in 2019-20, that’s how little it was worth at the time. (Honestly I don’t even remember whether they were getting paid then, or how much. But today he’d get $2+ million for a 4th year.)

In short, I bet a ton of guys are feeling like they got screwed by being ā€œa year too earlyā€. But all they have to do is look at the guys 1 year earlier than them and they should feel blessed.

Imagine Jayden Gardner. I think that was the first year of the ā€œportalā€ when transfers were immediately eligible. He was a huge get for UVA at the very start of NIL when it was actually just whatever players could earn from their names so nothing really. what 4 years later now, maybe $2M.

I remember when people were whispering about Kihei Clark passing the $100K mark in NIL earnings. It was scandalous.

Yeah I dug too deep with Guy, didn’t I. I didn’t even have to go that far back!

Should’ve remembered that Cedric was forced to earn a few bucks by catching chicken wings just… 3 years ago?
