If Power didn’t get so hot this summer, he’s probably a Cavalier. Tony evaluated correctly, but maybe no one anticipated his rise in the rankings this summer.
Then Tony needs to adjust Hoo he recruits …. Stay out of the top 30 waters
Hard to know sometimes I guess for those not already in top 30 who blow up…
Duke and Kentucky in same boat as Dean Smith Heels who used to offer scholarships to guys simply to keep them away from rivals knowing they have no real plans to use them a lot
If Tony closed in June, he’s probably a Wahoo.
That’s how you beat Duke. Is you get to them before they can offer.
Our best hope was an aggressive eval earlier (if possible) and a hard yes/no close before July.
Memory is shaky, but I think we tried on his visit. Can’t try too hard or you lose your chance to get him after the July period.
No idea what the answer is but there has to be a way to make your offer not seem like a safety net.
I get what you mean but should we not try to get good players? Identifying and closing on these guys early is how we succeed. We catch the breakout guys before they blow up. Ex) We closed out on Guy early and Jerome when he only had mid majors. We even got in on Mckneely and closed that early. Heck, Power was in that same range before a 40 point game this summer when we were overwhelming favorites. The key is to find & close these dudes out before the big fish come in. I do agree in thinking we need to at least move on some backup plans quicker when the blue bloods enter, but I don’t want to stop pursuing guys when we have to compete with Duke, Kentucky, etc.
IMO, The big loss here was not getting a Power commitment before Duke offered. Not that we lost to Duke head to head.
I mean that described Power to a T. He was in the usual range but he blew up late
