Exactly right. Revisionist.
That is how a large chunk of human decision making goes. We put together lists of our criteria and we even think we mean it at the time. But then decision making time comes and our black box of a brain spits out whatever answer it spits out. If it matches up, then great. If not, we retrofit our criteria and decision making to justify whatever answer we just produced.
The reasons people give for making decisions are usually more a glorified rationalization than the actual reasons.
Burbs suck
I’m probably not expressing myself well here. Agree that the UNC/Duke offers were “but for” causes that prevented him from committing to UVA. I’m questioning the depth of his desire to go to UVA but for the Duke offer. Thinking of the analogy to a guy who calls off a wedding when he strikes up an acquaintance with a super model after the rehearsal dinner. That would make you question the depth of his affinity for his fiancé and wonder if you should have seen this coming.
Mick, Fish and now Buchanan seemed more attached to UVA just prior to and after there commitments and less likely to stray if a blue blood, including Gonzaga here, came along at the last minute. The only thing of importance to my musings about Power is maybe it’s not just Duke wins every time, but Duke wins every time if recruits aren’t in love with UVA and are really susceptible to their allure no matter how much time Tony puts into the recruitment (unfortunately, probably the vast majority of recruits). In other, other words, folks like me were wrong that Power was more like one of the Isaacs than Juzang.
Totally agree. Until my wife makes me move to one
Just my observation from spending way too much time fretting over 17,18 year old kids college choices, but I really don’t buy the whole well he almost committed to us line of thought. Most people didn’t almost marry someone else. That’s what I equate choosing a school to. If he was that close to pulling the trigger and he truly loved Tony and our school he would be a hoo.
I still say f him and everything thing and everyone Puke related. Have a good day folks. Hopefully will be chasing the little white ball around the south plains of west Texas today!
Wahoowa
It is very plausible to me that he was on the verge of committing to us. Let’s put it in non basketball terms. Kid gets into UVA and loves it. Kid puts down a deposit. But kid also applied to Harvard and got waitlisted. Kid gets into Harvard late off the waitlist and instead goes there. I think one could reasonably say that the kid loved UVA, was about to attend, but then chose a different option when it was available
That’s fair.
I feel like this is true for most players though. I feel like any of the kids on our roster would be at Duke if Duke had offered.
well F Harvard too
I’d like to think that the Isaacs and Buchanan wouldn’t have jilted us for a Duke offer, and maybe Bond too, but I may be naïve. To state the obvious before I really need to focus on work this morning, the strength of Duke’s pursuit probably matters a lot too. There were rumors that Duke was interested in and in contact with several players who eventually committed to Tony (and may have even offered one or two?). But I don’t think it was the full bore press, say anything to convince them to come, that Scheyer made to Powers. BTW, I’m not going to be a Powers hater until he proves he deserves it on the court, but I kinda hope he ends up like Joey Baker and exposes Scheyer’s BS, even though that probably won’t matter to the next marginal top 25 kid that we duel with Duke over.
This 100% explains why UVa seemed like a perfect fit. We were his best offer so he was parroting reasons to like us best. Then duke offered and he started parroting some of theirs too. Retrofitting some of our best qualities onto the duke brand (which doesn’t possess them in comparable measure) in the SI article was especially frustrating.
There’s no way he actually grew up a fan of UVA as no fan would ever in a million ******* years choose Duke.
I grew up a Tech fan and ended up at UVA. One of my best friends at UVA had a family full of diehard Hokies and he was the biggest of them all before heading here
I hate the hokies but love the one I’m related to. Liking the hokies can easily be attributed to a lack of taste or poor judgement.
Liking anything about duke basketball is as simple as preferring evil over good.
Got to agree with this. I know teens can be wishy washy and I was when making my school choice, but they typically have a lean/preference from the beginning and it’s up to anyone else to knock that school off the No.1 spot.
Not gonna slam a kid for making a difficult decision about his future and with the current rules if he wants he can always amend his choice later.
That said hope Duke goes 0-30 nxt yr.
The team will be in a different place by then. Very unlikely to happen. New recruits and commitments changing the makeup and needs of the team.
Exactly, I feel the exact same about everything, EXCEPT I will not welcome him with open arms.
Isn’t it something like 80%-90% of our decisions are made by our ‘lizard brain’ and then we rationalize them with our higher level thinking after the fact?
Tony might have done too good of a job evaluating this cycle lol his top four targets went Duke, Kentucky, G League, Duke. Probably not battles we are going to win even if the staff has mostly figured out the recruiting issues from 4-5 years ago.
