šŸ€ Tony Bennett Retires, Ron Sanchez to be Interim HC

If true (and again Im waiting to see what tony says tomorrow), he pulled a Bo Ryan. Hopefully Sanchez is better than Greg Gard or we move on quickly if not

Link? Iā€™m feeling emotional and need to drown my feelings with impulse purchases

At least Sanchez isnā€™t an asshole. Small victories

Disagree.

CTB was fantastic. Virtually walked on water and can leave however he likes. But he doesnā€™t get to pick a successor.

I get that heā€™d want to, but thatā€™s not his job. If he became an AD, second-guessing the hoops coach would not be acceptable.

Under different circumstances I would be fine with Tony handing the program off to Sanchez, aka maybe two years from now after another final four run. If we had that level of stability and got Ron off on the right foot I could see it working, I know you can point to Neptune at Nova as an example of it not working but it would at least be worth a try.

But with the program in its current state I donā€™t think you can risk just handing it off to Sanchez without doing a proper coaching search, weā€™re not in a bad spot but also kinda in a state of flux at the moment where things could fall off a cliff if not handled correctly.

Oh god the guy on Trillyā€™s space mentioned Mitch Henderson (Princeton), Matt Langel (Colgate) and Kyle Smith (Stanford).

Christ Almighty, this is gonna be a looooooooooong process.

Then he said the name heā€™d heard the most with UVa preliminarily is Ryan Odom, whichā€¦alright! Better!

Agree that he can do whatever he wants but pick his successor. And I canā€™t believe that Tony ā€“ Mr. 5 Pillars ā€“ would do something conniving because Carla didnā€™t give him his way on that. I believe that he just got fed up with NIL, and decided now was as good a time as any with a former head coach on the bench and a nice core he just recruited. The fact that his buddy gets a trial run and give Carla a year to evaluate him plus amp up for a hire if need be is a bonus, but not the goal.

Ryan Odom. Finally mentions a reasonable name.

Whether we like it or not, the norm with HoF coaches is that they have heavy input re: their successor. Particularly if that person has been part of the programā€™s success. Thatā€™s very much the norm and it isnā€™t weird for a coach to expect that.

Personally, Iā€™ve always thought thatā€™s silly. But itā€™s very obviously a norm in the sport. Duke, Nova, Syracuse, UNC, etc etc.

Would be fine with virginia or Tony bucking that trend but I donā€™t really fault anyone if they donā€™t, given the state of play.

Henderson - Good, but also he can be the legend there if he stays.
Langel - Meh, way too big of a step up.
Smith - Personally I like, but as mentioned above, same age as TB.

This isnā€™t the way to do it though.

Input is one thing, sticking a gun to the programā€™s head is another.

The brief part I listened to he was talking about how ā€œUVA had a lot of guys leave this offseasonā€ like we had some sort of mass transfer exodus. Thatā€™s when I turned it off.

Yeah I think the only guy on the list Iā€™d be willing to listen to is Henderson, but it would be taking a chance with a guy who hasnā€™t done it at this level. At least with Odom, you know he can win big games (unfortunate for us).

THIS DUDE KEEPS SAYING RICHIE MCKAY DOESNā€™T STRIKE HIM AS A UVA GUY WITHOUT MENTIONING AT ALL THAT MCKAY WAS AN ASSISTANT FOR TONY WHAT THE HELL IS HAPPENING

Yeah this guy isnā€™t a great UVa knowledge source but Zach Carey is on now.

His coaching suggestions made me want to end it all.

Zach just mentioned that Richie was an assistant for five years and the dude was like, 'Oh yeah, totally spaced on that."

At least see what happens this year. If we suck, there certainly will be change. If weā€™re good, then by all means give him a chance.

I love Henderson and Langel personally.
