šŸ€ Tony Bennett Retires, Ron Sanchez to be Interim HC

Just got a chance to watch the presser. I don’t know how many times I said to myself, ā€œMan, he’s goodā€. He expresses himself so well, makes so much sense, sounds like such a wonderful human being. We are all going to miss him.

Why now? Here is my speculation, most of it said in other places.

  1. He had already decided that it was close (NIL, chaos), probably at the end of the year.
  2. He has too much morality to recruit a 2026 kid knowing he would have to essentially lie if he wanted to get him to UVA.
  3. He likes the talent on this team and thinks they can be really good next year. He thinks the best way forward (keep the kids) is for an almost seamless transition to Sanchez. He hates the thought of his staff out job hunting.
  4. Carla wouldn’t assure him that would happen, so this gives his staff the best chance.

I was pretty pissed last night (assuming it wasn’t health related) but now I am just sad.

Sounds like Sanchez and Bennett both left jobs because of the new Wild West of college basketball. It’s just that whereas Tony didn’t want to play the game, Ron is willing to play the game but wanted to be on the winning side.

My biggest concern moving forward is … how on god’s green earth is Ron or anyone else on staff going to be able to recruit?

I can’t remember where this came from, but didn’t TB tell someone (donor call, maybe) that Ron had helped him get his head around NIL?

Your roster is set up that the main focus is just on recruiting the roster that’s already here, plus Mallory who Sanchez is already close with. And the best way to recruit all of them is to win, simple as that. After that we either have a stable head coach for at least a few years or we press reset anyway

What real purposeful recruiting is happening in the throes of a season?

Some have suggested conflict between Tony and Carla in how this is handled. Really, the timing of this situation gives Carla some cover. She doesn’t have to make a choice now, Tony’s guy gets an audition, and Carla gets a free look at a potential candidate. There’s already familiarity between current coaches and a pretty talented group of players. No time right now for any other program changes, just put one foot in front of the other for this pending season and focus on basketball. Very real possibility that all this works out well for everyone. So why not. Only other thing left is bitching and moaning, but I’m more interested in seeing this squad play.

Me too! Stream the scrimmages, Ronchez! Be your own man. Time to individuate. (or how about a box score at the very least?)

The key is recruiting the kids you already have.

We have one available scholly — and with Ament’s timing, that could still work out.

As for 2026, we have three (McKneely, Saunders, Rohde). HGN already said most of that recruiting would be in the spring, even with Bennett.

For fans, this is great timing. April would have been hand wringing and panic about significant roster attrition. Now, we get ball in a few weeks with multiple new features (coach, offense, transfers). I’m actually excited to see how it shakes out.

  1. No more worrying about Coach retiring!
  2. If Coach ends up at another D1 school, it will feel like finding out my girlfriend remarried after giving me the ā€œit’s not you - it’s meā€ speech.
  3. My job has a mandatory retirement age of 65; I hope to be in a financial position before that age so I can ā€œpull a Tonyā€.

I am fine with it if he’s good! I’m not sold on him as a candidate quite yet, but if he does as well at VCU this season as expected he should be a no-brainer candidate.

I kind of like the poetry of it to be honest. The UMBC loss really doesn’t bother me that much anymore anyways.

How Sanchez can win me over, especially since I will be on the National Search committee

  1. Convert the Georgetown scrimmage into a charity game at Capital One in honor of #BehanStrong. Or have it in a local high school gym that can be crowded

  2. Orange And1 unis in our first marquee game

  3. All the content.

  4. Openly talk about poaching players on other teams during post game press conferences. And a $3 million bag to Nate Ament.

  5. Hire Houston WIlson (scouting) and Damin Altizer (Player Development).

I feel like you’re underrating the appeal of bitching and moaning.

I feel like the Sanchez blueprint is pretty simple:

  1. Win
  2. Go and get Ament, whatever it takes

That would basically make him bulletproof. If he wants to get people on board, Ament is a surefire way to do it.

Have the excess money from Tony’s contract rerouted to him, fuck it.

Largely agree. Winning fixes a surprisingly large number of things.

Gonna be a bit before I decide what my personal happiness number will be, probably 22-ish and making the NCAA tournament, but we’ll see.

The only way to keep the Dean and Markel families united behind Coach Sanchez is (1) get Ament, (2) stream the B/W, charity scrimmages, foreign trips, and what the hell, every practice, (3) orange alt unis once or twice a year (but no more!), and (4) get to the Sweet 16, ah heck, final 4.
