Ronchez will be one of the candidates for the job. The interim coach always is. He just has a unique application process.
There is no time which would have been good for Coach Bennett to retire, IMO. However, in many respects, this is the best of all possibilities. Personally, I want to see the program continue with the same values and approach he valued and employed, and this is probably the best way to achieve that. I really want Coach Sanchez to succeed, and at a high level. It sounds as though you will be disappointed if he does succeed so you canāt say, āI told you so!ā, and thatās kind of pathetic. I donāt think this forum needs such negativity at this time.
How big were Sanchezās rotations at Charlotte? Asking for a friend.
Barnes, Mike Montgomery (Stanford) and maybe Gillen. I think was a 3rd but cant remember hoo
This was his last year ā at least in terms of playable depth.
Also shows his eye for talent ā Khalifa at Louisville, Patterson at Minnesota, Williams at Nebraska, Milicic at Tennesseeā¦.
Sorry. Iām just sad. Really really sad.
I would humbly suggest you focus on the Five Pillars that helped build this program.
So it seems like Ron may have actually done a better job at UNCC than record might indicate, if he kept losing top guys to bigger programs.
The story at the time was that Holland had wanted to hand the reins to Odom, but A.D Jim Copeland (IIRC) wouldnāt go along with it. Odom left for Wake before Holland announced his retirement. Supposedly, Rick Barnes verbally agreed to accept the postion, and then reneged but only after Mike Montgomery had been informed the position had been filled. By then, Montgomery had let it be known he was staying at Stanford. Copeland was then left with Jeff Jones as a option. All in all, it was a horribly conducted search and Copeland left for SMU shortly after. I think. That said, Jones was a great hire until his off court shenanigans came to light to the detriment of all involved (as well as a few poor recruiting choices). At least, thatās the way I remember it. Any corrections would be welcome.
To me the sentiment that Ron wasnāt good at Charlotte simply because of record doesnāt hold especially when you look at what was going on there before him. Their last postseason appearance prior to the CBI title run was 2005. Mark Price that thing deep into the ground. By the time he left, Sanchez at least got the program stable when all it had known in the last 15 years was instability.
Is this gonna work here? Iāve got no clue! Ron could fall flat on his face and it turn out awful or he could be just the change of pace (maybe a little on the nose there) that UVa needed. I just donāt think judging by record at Charlotte is entirely accurate.
Go buy a lottery ticket
Virginia, Wake Forest, Stanford, SMU all involved in that story. The ACC was telling us what it would be a long time agoā¦
I could have added that four years later Barnes accepted the Clemson job!
It was Jeff Mullins
Who it looks like, ironically, coached at UNC Charlotte
Didnāt think this would make me as emotional as it did
I think a lot of the salt from Charlotte fans was Sanchez dipping right after he lost Khalifa and Williams to power 5 schools AND at the same time Charlotte moving up a conference with a worse roster. No idea if Igor was also already in the portal or not. And him losing Jhamir Young to Maryland and others in the years before; it actually puts Sanchez in a good spot in how he inherited an awful Charlotte program and at least got them to 20 win seasons again with perpetually losing your best players to the portal
I laugh at this bc as a Mavs fan, the last 7-8 years of his tenure was the entire fanbase bitching that he was stubborn in his ways and didnāt play young guys (a ton of guys were on board with giving JA a bigger chance, guys like Josh Green, etc.). He also clashed with Luka a bit- so it would be very funny to see him adjust to the college environment from the pro structure. He seems to have made some adjustments at Indiana, and is obviously a top tier coach.
PSA to anyone who needs it: avoid any takes from national commentators who havenāt spent much time thinking about TB and UVA until today, avoid them like they are the plague. The hoops-focused folks are probably fine, but your Wetzels and Fordes arenāt gonna tell you anything worth listening to.
