Could be that in the level playing field days, we got a kid like Cam Ward. Now those kids (not saying Ward specifically) come into his office with their hands out — what are you going to give me? And the fact that not only are you recruiting HS kids, you’re recruiting your own roster every spring.
I know that the Traudt transfer tore him up. It’s just different now — and not in a way he likes.
That said, if a family member is also sick, it’s an easier way out.

Sorry, but I just can’t buy that. Coaching changes happen every Spring, and with the portal now in place, a roster can be overhauled in a few weeks with a new guy.
This is going to sound bad, but I’m not excited about the idea of Sanchez or JW taking over.

Will always be grateful for the incredible run in 2019. Wish the timing was different but it’s been the only team I root for that’s been good in the last twenty years. Hopefully the new coach will have a better record in first round games.

To be brutally honest, I’d be supportive but pretty lukewarm about the prospects of Ron Sanchez taking over. To me he’s just Tony-lite, not really an upgrade in any way other than maybe being a little more open minded offensively. He did ok at Charlotte but not amazing, and in terms of his resume we should be able to do better.
I think in terms of continuing the excellent culture Tony built here, and potentially roster continuity it’s a very good hire, but I really hope we at the very least go through the due dilligence of seeing who would be interested in the offseason. If someone like Shaka or Otz did actually want to come here I don’t see how you turn either of them down in favor of Sanchez, even if it pisses off Tony.

Tony’s dad also suddenly retired from both Wisconsin and Washington st. And Bo Ryan suddenly retired from Wisconsin. Might just be Wisconsin genetics (not sure what explains dean Smith)

I wonder if players were trying to negotiate NIL or were disgruntled at this point in the year and he just couldn’t take it anymore. That’s happened in football.

Usually there is, but as… crap, someone, just noted in one of these threads, Chris Graham of all people spotted that CTB’s own contract buyout was reduced to almost nothing in June.
A lot of the better paid coaches have multi-million $$ buyout clauses, sometimes if they go to another school and sometimes if they leave for any reason. CTB’s was initially $3M but its been slowly reduced over the years and was knocked down to $250k back in June.

Yeah that’s why I think this is set up as the perfect audition for Sanchez that Tony maybe wanted while getting out the game he now hates (assuming there is no real hidden health issue please no).
And I think it was @lodger96 who said Shaka Smart made it known the UVA job was his dream job. I assume if Sanchez doesn’t work out there will be names

We’re a LONG ways away, but if this ended with Shaka as our HC I’d be pretty happy honestly. It’s not a perfect situation by any means, I wish Tony was here for another 20 years but I like Shaka a lot. Good coach, good guy, good recruiter.

With you. I would really like to know what the feel is on why Sanchez would be the interim other than the obvious that he has been an HC. I feel like JWilly would be more likely to innovate and adapt to the modern game. Maybe I’m just projecting a bit.
