šŸ€ Tony Bennett Retires, Ron Sanchez to be Interim HC

Lord be with the Bennett family during this time. I personally am thankful for the 15 wonderful years he gave us. Not once did I ever expect a Natty but it sure was sweet. The clear highlight of this fan’s sporting life.
I also feel for you guys… there is an emptiness in my stomach. UVA basketball will never be the same. :face_holding_back_tears:

CTB brought us a National Championship. He made the program better for longer than we have ever scene. He did it all with grace and class.

He can exit however and whenever he wants and I support it 100%.

He owes the University and its fans nothing.

I wish him the best, hope this is not a health issue for his family, and cannot thank him enough for what he has done for the University

I’ve never gotten the impression that the changes to college sports, NIL and the portal, bothered Bennett that much. I think that’s just sort of one of those things people assume. He didn’t love it, but they had mitigated things to the point where it didn’t really effect him that much.

Before any of that happened, retirement on the horizon was talked about as an almost certainty. I just think the way he is, he’s prone to burn out. His dad was the same.

Assuming it’s Sanchez, I hope he either knocks it out the park, or it’s clear he’s not the guy at the ACC level. 18-19 wins, middle of the pack in the ACC, and just missing the NCAA’s leaves too much up in the air going into next Spring. Especially if someone like Shaka is open to coming back to VA.

Pre-season retirements suck. There’s no feel good avenue this goes down. When a coach retires this close to the season it’s for a crappy reason. The likely best case scenario is Tony screwed over Aimes, Power, Saunders, Lang, Warley, Cofie, and Sharma. Other possibilities are worse news

I was at practice last week and I can state that Tony was in total command of the entire practice (and I really liked what I saw from the team). Tony also did a Zoom call with Kyle Guy and the Sabre Society YESTERDAY(!) I am going to wait until I hear what Tony says tomorrow but if this was a ploy to get Sanchez an audition, I cannot see many other donors wanting to support Sanchez and will want to run a process to get the best coach for UVA.

I’m extremely underwhelmed by Sanchez. Hope they don’t do anything too drastic and make him full HC. Interim is fine for now.

Go get Luke Murray in the offseason.

That last is a fact. 2014 - 2019 may have been the best we’ll ever see.

The sun always sets…

I’m too frustrated to post anymore.

Tony has been that one thing we could always brag about say, ā€œThat’s our guy.ā€ And other fans respected that. Being a UVA fan isn’t easy a lot of the time, but you could always come back to Tony. This is a huge loss.

Can we go back to arguing about RD’s jumper please?

If this was completely to get Sanchez an audition, he could easily announce that this is his last year and do what K did for his successor. Basically let Sanchez handle everything publicly.

I’m not buying that as the reason for the timing. This screws all the players and makes him seem like a jerk and who would ever think that Tony Bennett was a jerk to them?

I’m just sad now.

I mean you can’t really beat 2014-2019. Reminds me of the quote from Andy in the office.

I wish there was a way to know you’re in the good old days before you leave them

That’s what broke Tony. Seeing Ryan light it up from NBA 3 after being unable to make anything more than a dunk here, made Tony doubt his abilities and made him think he ā€œlost itā€.

Joking

good thing i have a huge ass playlist on youtube with nothing but uva games time to go rejoice

Oh I don’t think he’s leaving now just to set up Ron. Yeah he’d like to do that, but this wasn’t planned long in advance. He wanted to go out on top and do it that way. We’ll see what he has to say.

I don’t even know whether to be happy or sad that we got Tony for 15 years. I’ll be forever grateful for the success and happiness he brought this fanbase during that extended time period (will NEVER forget 2019), but goddamn if it didn’t feel like he would be our K or Dean Smith in terms of longevity.

Really don’t know what to say. Of course hope it’s not a family situation, but why would he go to media day? Timing is so so odd. Do this 2 weeks ago if it had been coming. I really wonder if this is a recent decision. Wonder if we hold onto Chance.

I totally agree that he’s earned the right to do this on his own terms. End of an era. I feel sick.
