I may be in the minority, but I think that we have guys on the roster currently who are more than capable of stepping up and playing at a high level. I’m hoping we don’t have too much transfer attrition.

I agree that we have a good mix of untested, but talented players— the kind of players that Tony has built into elite teams in the past. I’m a little skeptical it will fully happen next season unless something unexpected happens with Keels, etc, and I have no idea how we will emerge from the transfer free-for-all. I’m an eternal optimist, though, about Tony’s program and feel we will back in the top 10 again in two years.

So what exactly happened with the 2021 class? About a year or a year and a half ago it looked like this could possibly be one of Tony’s best classes with heavy involvement with recruits like Keels and Reid, and later with Kaufman, Warley, Sochan, and Houstan. We got a commitment from Murray in September and things just seemed to shut down. I guess I’m just wondering how we went from what looked like a great class to an almost 17-18 recruiting redux with a large amount of misses. I’m assuming it’s because the roster is quite crowded at the moment, especially at the 2-3 spots.

We thought 2021 was a want class with lack of playing time. By the time things moved on it became clear 2021 was a needs class but too late. Thank god for the transfer portal.

Shouldn’t every class be a needs class though? You can’t expect every recruit to pan out. In fact, until they do, you should really expect every recruit to be a bust. I think that mentality and way of recruiting would help reduce the drop off between years we’re competing and years where we seemingly have a huge drop off.
Clearly we’re in the position we are now because of two things: the 17-18 classes and the 19 class not contributing a ton so far. I know we like to dog on Casey for not playing all that great, but he was thrust into the starting lineup in his first college game. Frankly it was unfair to him to expect him to perform at a high level before we could give him the chance to develop.
I think the loss of Marco Anthony and Frankie Badocchi for this team can’t be overstated. Two players who should both be seniors at positions we clearly have a need at: shooting from the guard spot and a physical presence inside. I understand that Badocchi had to walk away for a different reason, but I still don’t understand why Anthony decided to transfer the year after three starting positions had opened up after the championship run.

Do we have a clear answer as to why Jabri never got more time? I realize his early development was likely slowed by his injury during his senior year, but it is still wild to me that he never got any sort of real playing time. Was his defense that bad? Because I know that kid can put the ball in the bucket. Was it mostly just because Trey was eligible this year?

I think it’s more regardless of our needs and wants its hard to sell playing time on a full roster even with players not panning out.

I mean, if you watched the few minutes he played, I thought it was pretty obvious why he was getting no time. Not that you can totally judge a player by their performance in mop up, but his feet were really slow and he was getting blown by by back up guards on other teams. If he sticks with it and works on his foot speed/not falling for head and ball fakes and staying disciplined, think he’ll be fine, but that was my operating assumption. He just did not look ready to play our defense.

I saw the same thing. He looked like a walk-on trying to stay in front of people when he was in on mop up duty.

Why do people have to be so antagonistic on this forum? Aren’t we all rooting for the same team? I get disagreements but to call someone “tutu” for voicing his opinion when that’s not even his name is a bit beneath being a UVA fan IMO.
