šŸ€ Transfer Portal Recruiting Thread

I still love my Anthony Gill comparison, it’s spot on with this guy. Stout but surprisingly good athleticism for his size.

He needs to use his size and athleticism down low. That’s the knock on him: he too often settles for 3’s and doesn’t score enough in the paint. Only 9% of his points have come on post ups but he’s got the tools to tap into that part of his game. That’s why I like the upside and feel SDSU fans were sad to see him go. Many thought he was ready to take a leap.

So are we confirmed that UCLA didn’t lose anyone else? Still at 13 ships?

Can anyone confirm Trent Perry exists? Apparently there’s another Trent Perry out of Texas in like the 2026 or 2025 class. Maybe Tony got confused.

Today’s manifestations.

Elijah Saunders as the 3/4 shooting wing (since he even played some 3 for San Diego St).

Ven Lubin as the 4/5 bruiser forward.

Kevin Patton Jr as a redshirt development/you pitch him as a Trey Murphy and Ryan Dunn hybrid (he’s a better 3pt shooter than the Aussie was during his freshman year)

And then Perry is on board

Also explains why Shaka was camping out in Northern Virginia for Adrien Stevens while no one else was even that heavily involved with HSers

Lol at the random drive-by on the MWC, good work Shaka.

The full piece is pretty good:

I like this as a general summary of portal dynamics and how they intersect with coaches’ incentives and preferences; obviously not true exactly as written at all schools:

What this shows is that there’s a very good reason why coaches love the transfer portal, even while dreading it. When you recruit a high school player, you know almost certainly you won’t be getting much production from them right away. It will be a multi-year process. With a transfer, you already know what they are, for the most part, and how to integrate them into the existing roster right away. Most coaches always live in fear of getting fired, so it makes logical sense why they would focus on the ā€œsurerā€ thing.

And with the ability to transfer freely, those same freshmen not getting minutes are more likely to take their ball and go find a place they will. Again, it is rational for all parties to act as they have. That’s why we are seeing the environment.

Even just using the portal to ā€œpatchā€ holes in the roster or make up for missed evals can become somewhat self-reinforcing. I’d like for UVA to be able to step out of that kind of transfer cycle for the most part. I don’t think it’s a place where we have much of a comparative advantage, at least the kind we can get in HS recruiting. I’m kinda hopeful that this will be the case next off-season, but time will tell.

Damn. Cant let him get to Clemson

Edit. Wait doesn’t Clemson still have Sheff and that other tall 4 that likes to shoot 3s?

He’d be behind Schefflin there. We still have the best overall opportunity for him.

It’s never easy but I still like our chances. He’s a starter here

Saunders plays like BVP imo, Power is still more of a finesse/stretch 4 as well. Dell’ is a three.

We still don’t have a bouncy 4 that I think we will need. Anyone still in the portal that fits the mold?

And he’s a better 3pt shooter than Dunn (27-80 33.8% vs 7-35 20%)

(don’t know about definite lottery next year LOL its just a random Twitter account gassing someone up)

Well we do have Buchanan, Robinson, and Cofie, who have already decided they would like to play some basketball for UVA…

It blows my mind they we have guys going into their 7th seasons while Warley only has 1 year left, I guess he was a freshman right after the covid year

Hard pass. Can’t shoot. At all.

Which means he’s likely our guy. Can’t have guys that can shoot and score.

He shot 72.5% on his free throws last year, so maybe he’s a late-game insertion to protect the lead when we’re ahead.
